Fishing inherently comes with a lot of guesswork. From when to go to where to go to how to catch them, the sport comes with lots of question marks. The Fishbox app aims to simplify things for anglers by answering these core questions, as well as the many others anglers have during a day on the water.
In fact, you can ask Fishbox’s AI agent any question that pertains to fishing, and it’ll give you its best guess. And, as a longtime angler, I’ve got to say: Its best guess is pretty darn good.
Personal Experience

Though I had never heard of Fishbox before I tested it out for this review, what I’ve seen during my deep dive into the platform has impressed me quite a bit. And I’m not the only one. Across iOS, Android, and the web, Fishbox has garnered 3,000,000 installs.
I dove in headfirst and scoped out the maps, fishing spot recommendations, weather features, bite forecast predictor, and more. There’s even a 102-page digital magazine that comes with the app. But what impressed me most was the Fishbox AI assistant, designed and trained specifically to help anglers catch more fish.
Here’s how Fishbox answers the three most important questions in angling: where to go, when to go, and how to catch them.
Where to Go

On the front end of any fishing trip, you have to decide where you want to go. Whether you’re fishing from the bank, a kayak, a big boat, or by any other means, Fishbox helps you find the best place to go based on your particular situation. You can explore local lakes, rivers, and other waterways on the interactive map, find the nearest boat ramps, and even get some hotspot recommendations to try.
Some of the recommendations for my local lakes were pretty strong, being in close proximity to where I’ve had some great days on the water and where I know other anglers have won lots of tournaments. Having even a handful of community holes to explore with confidence when you first hit the water is a huge help in figuring out what the bass are doing and how to catch them.
When to Go

While there’s no bad time to go fishing, there are times when catching is more or less likely. Fishbox has a proprietary Fishing Forecast bite predictor fueled by real-time weather data and real angler expertise. The algorithm maps out the windows of time when fish should be not only the most active but also feeding in your exact area. Additionally, it gives you a general idea of when the bite should wane a bit.
The app breaks its weather forecasts down by the hour so you can identify minute changes in barometric pressure, wind, or other environmental parameters, and then plan accordingly. There are also lunar and solar calendars automatically used in the background to further aid in refining recommendations.
How to Catch Them

The “Insights” section is where Fishbox helps you learn how to catch fish. There’s practical information to help any angler improve, with more than 50 knot-tying tutorials and tips, as well as techniques for a wide range of species. But it’s the AI assistant that steals the show when it comes to insights.
Trained to fish, the AI assistant can accurately answer nearly any question imaginable when it comes to aquatic pursuits. Think Google if Google were named Bubba. You can use the AI assistant to find fishing spots, help you choose baits, figure out what the fish should be biting, and more.
I put this feature through the wringer and was pretty impressed by how well the answers lined up with the intel I’ve amassed from nearly four decades on the water. And, if the bot needs a little more info from you to provide a better answer, it doesn’t mind asking. The more detail you give it, the better its advice will be.
Other Features and Add-Ons

There are free and premium versions of the Fishbox app, and the free version has a lot: basic AI assistant, general weather forecasts, spot recommendations, logbook, etc. The premium version is $6.99 for a one-month subscription, $29.99 for a six-month subscription, or $35.99 for a one-year subscription. With a paid subscription, you can access the premium version’s beefed-up AI assistant and more detailed weather forecasts, along with 24/7 customer support, personal notifications, and additional map layers. You can even bring Navionics maps into the app, but you will need a separate subscription from Navionics to do so.
The digital magazine is pretty impressive, too. The Ultimate Fishing Playbook – Freshwater Edition is packed with 102 pages of info to help answer those same three questions that plague every angler: where to go, when to go, and how to catch them. The Playbook is a detailed guide loaded with species-specific advice, techniques that have been proven to work, and insight from experienced anglers.
Final Thoughts
Would I recommend this app? Absolutely — especially the free version to any angler who’s just getting started. I do believe the premium version would serve a certain clientele well, too, and it’s something you can grow into if you want to start by trying out the free version.
