If you’ve ever spent time around the Toyota Bonus Bucks Owners Tournament, you know it’s more than just another bass fishing derby. It’s part competition, part reunion and part celebration of the passion that drives anglers to chase green fish from daylight to weigh-in. This year’s stop at legendary Lake Guntersville was a perfect example and standing at the top of the leaderboard when the scales closed were a pair of smiling faces who embody everything the event stands for.
Teamwork, fun and a shared love for life on the water.
Keith and Penny Miller of Scottsboro, Alabama claimed first place in the 2025 Toyota Owners Tournament, earning a $5,000 prize and a truckload of bragging rights to go with it.
For the Millers, though, it wasn’t just about the check or the trophies. It was about the experience.
“We just love the camaraderie of this tournament,” said Keith, grinning ear to ear after the final weigh-in. “It’s so much fun. The people and the atmosphere; it’s just different here. To win here on Guntersville, that’s really special for us.”
A Team On and Off the Water
Keith and Penny have been married 35 years and it shows in the way they fish together. There’s an easy rhythm between them and it’s the kind that only comes from years of shared casts, friendly competition and long days spent chasing bass under Alabama skies.
“Sometimes he’s a really good guide,” Penny laughed as they posed with their trophies. “And sometimes I can actually out fish him. But he’s taught me so much. We always make it a good time, no matter how we do.”
They’re not the loudest or flashiest team in the field but they represent what so many couples who fish together strive for. Patience, partnership and a shared joy for the outdoors.
This was the Millers’ third Toyota Owners Tournament and according to them, it won’t be their last.
“We look forward to it every single year,” Penny said. “It’s circled on the calendar as soon as the dates are announced. We just love being part of this community.”
The Pattern That Paid

Guntersville has a reputation for being both generous and stingy. It’s full of bass but it can humble even the best when conditions shift. The Millers found the key to consistency by targeting scattered grass in the mid-lake area, a zone that many anglers often overlook in favor of heavy mats or offshore ledges.
“It wasn’t easy with this cold front that came in. It was tough on everyone we’ve talked to,” Penny said. “We had to grind it out but that’s what makes it so rewarding. When you figure out that one small detail together, it’s the best feeling in the world.”
Toyota Dependability On and Off the Water
One of the things that makes the Toyota Owners Tournament unique is the bond between anglers and their trucks. For many participants, their Toyota isn’t just a vehicle but rather part of the team. That’s certainly true for the Millers.
Keith’s 2021 Toyota Tundra has over 84,000 miles on it, and he swears it’s never missed a beat.
“It tows our bass boat seamlessly,” Keith said proudly. “We’ve hauled it all over the South to these tournaments and it’s never let us down. That reliability means a lot, especially when you’re traveling with your wife and you want to know you’re getting there safe. I can’t say enough good things about it.”
That kind of loyalty is what Toyota Owners events are built around. Celebrating the brand’s performance while creating a platform for anglers to come together.
A Professionally Run, Family-Focused Event
Every angler who’s been part of a Toyota Owners Tournament will tell you the same thing: these events are first-class from start to finish. From registration to weigh-in, the organization and professionalism are second to none.
“The folks who run this tournament do an incredible job,” Keith said. “Everything is smooth, everything’s on time and everyone is so friendly. You can tell they really care about the anglers.”
Penny agreed, adding that the event isn’t just for the hardcore tournament crowd. It’s for families, too.
“There’s something for everyone,” she said. “Even if you’re not fishing, it’s such a fun environment. You meet new friends, talk fishing, share stories and just enjoy being outside. That’s what makes it special.”
From great food and giveaways to the friendly competition among Toyota owners, the entire event feels like a celebration of the fishing lifestyle. The Millers spent their evenings chatting with other teams, laughing about missed bites and swapping stories the fishing lifestyle.
“It’s the people that make it,” Keith said. “Sure, we love to fish but the friendships we’ve made through these tournaments are what keep us coming back.”
Looking Ahead
With a first-place finish now under their belts, the Millers are already thinking about the next stop on the Toyota Owners schedule.
“We’ll do everything we can to be there,” Keith said without hesitation. “This isn’t just a tournament for us. It’s something we truly enjoy doing together. Winning is great, but even if we hadn’t, we’d still have had the time of our lives.”
Their success on Lake Guntersville is a reminder of what makes bass fishing such a special pursuit. It’s the laughter in the boat and the satisfaction of spending a day on the water with someone you love.
For Keith and Penny Miller, that’s what this win represents.
As the sun set over the big lake and the crowd began to thin, the couple stood side by side, holding their trophies with the easy smiles of two people who know what really matters.
“Fishing together keeps us close,” said Penny. “We’ve been doing this a long time and it never gets old. Days like this one remind us why we started.”
And with that, they loaded up their Tundra, backed down the ramp one more time and eased their boat onto the trailer. It was another chapter written in a lifelong love story of fishing, fun and shared adventure.
