I first became aware of Seaguar’s PEX8 Micro Braid at a media event a couple years ago. I was impressed with how supple it felt in hand, as well as how thin it seemed to be. But that was nothing compared to how it performed on the water, casting well and providing unbelievable sensitivity. Since then, it’s become my go-to braid in situations where reaction time counts.

For finesse anglers, forward-facing sonar (FFS) users, and anyone obsessed with maximizing casting distance and sensitivity, Seaguar PEX8 Lure Edition is one of the most interesting braided lines currently on the market. This Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) braid was designed around ultra-thin diameter, smooth handling, and maximum sensitivity, giving anglers a line that feels noticeably different from traditional American braided lines. Seaguar claims PEX8 is up to 22% thinner than typical braid while still maintaining strong knot performance and abrasion resistance.

How Seaguar PEX8 Micro Braid Performed

TRIKA 6x Spinning Rod

At first glance, the most impressive thing about the PEX8 Lure Edition is how incredibly thin it is for its rated pound test. Anglers familiar with traditional U.S. braid ratings may actually think they received the wrong spool when they first open it. The line is extremely fine, supple, and smooth, which translates directly into excellent casting distance and reduced friction through guides. In practice, the line casts like a dream, and performs exceptionally well on finesse spinning setups and BFS gear. The line comes in hi-vis passion pink, with a contrasting lime green color that lets you see the line more clearly. The contrasting colors also allow you to figure out the depth you’re fishing with drop shot, FFS, or any finesse applications.

One of the biggest strengths of the PEX8 Lure Edition is sensitivity. Because it has virtually no stretch, it transmits subtle bites extremely well. This makes it especially effective for drop-shotting, finesse swimbaits, Ned rigs, hover strolling, and other light-line techniques where detecting tiny changes in bottom composition or pressure bites matters. The metered high-visibility pink and lime-green color system also helps anglers visually track line movement and depth, which is particularly useful when fishing vertically with forward-facing sonar or deep finesse presentations.

The smoothness of the 8-carrier weave is another win. Compared to rougher 4-strand braids, the PEX8 flows extremely well off spinning reels and creates noticeably less guide noise. On light spinning setups, this translates into longer casts with smaller lures and better line management overall. Anglers fishing ultralight or BFS gear will likely appreciate this line more than power fishermen throwing heavy cover techniques.

Over the past few months, I utilized PEX8 Lure Edition on a Shimano Stradic, paired with a Trika 6X spinning rod. I mostly used finesse techniques like Ned rigs, shaky heads, and gently bouncing tubes along the bottom. But the line also got a workout throwing jerk baits in the cold water. I paired it with fluorocarbon leaders from 6 to 12 feet in length, in pound tests that I varied to match how sticky the bottom was.

PEX8 performed excellently in all of those situations, and surprised me a bit with how well it held up when I got too close to structure — though I made sure to cut back after contact with sharp stuff. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this braid anytime I’m throwing the finer stuff, as well as jerkbaiting. Though I’m not a big FFS guy, I can say that this line will be perfect for anyone shakin’ a minnow.

Best Uses

Seaguar PEX8 Lure Edition performs best in finesse-oriented applications where sensitivity, casting distance, and smooth handling are critical. It excels for drop shot fishing, Ned rigs, hover strolling, BFS fishing, and finesse swimbaits, where the ultra-thin diameter and supple 8-strand construction allow anglers to make long casts while maintaining exceptional bite detection. The line also performs very well for dock skipping and vertical jigging, especially on spinning gear where reduced friction and improved line management make a noticeable difference. It also performed really well with jerkbaits, which was really welcome when I forgot my baitcasters at home.

It should be noted that 8-strand braid isn’t known for abrasion resistance, and that holds true for PEX8. While it can handle heavier applications in certain situations, it is not specifically designed for extreme heavy-cover fishing. Techniques like frogging and punching thick grass are better suited to more abrasion-resistant power-fishing braids. And if you’re going to fish PEX8 around sharp rocks, wrecks, or heavy cover, make sure you use a long fluorocarbon leader.

Different Rating System

Seaguar PEX8 colors

Japanese PE ratings differ substantially from traditional U.S. pound-test standards. In practical use, the line may break closer to its stated rating rather than significantly above it like some American braids do. That means anglers should choose sizes based more on diameter and intended technique than simply on pound-test numbers. I included this chart to help you understand the rating system.

Diameter and Breaking Strength Chart

PE SizeRated TestDiameter (mm)Approximate Diameter (inches)Best Applications
PE 0.612 lb0.128 mm0.005″BFS, ultralight spinning
PE 0.816 lb0.148 mm0.006″Ned rigs, drop shot
