South Dakota Smallmouth Bass State Record Broken

The South Dakota smallmouth bass state record has been broken for the 19th time by resident Derek Valnes.

The 7-pound even state record fish was caught at Horseshoe Lake in northeastern South Dakota on Oct. 26, 2013.

Valnes’ bass beat the previous record of 6 pounds, 9 ounces caught from Lake Poinsett in 2008 by Darin Laue of Castlewood, S.D.

The new state record smallmouth was 21 1/2 inches long and had a girth of 18 inches and it wasn’t the only nice smallmouth Valnes caught that day.
