Fisherman Arrested After Firing Gun During Dispute on the Water

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers were dispatched Tuesday Nov. 7, 2023 after it was reported shots were fired on the water near Rodriguez Key in the Florida Keys. They arrested a Key Largo fisherman after he reportedly fired a rifle twice across the bow of the commercial fishing vessel into the water on Tuesday. An FWC spokesperson reported the two fishermen were fishing close to each other about 7 miles off the coast of Rodriguez Key when a dispute broke out.

George W. Dixon, of Key Largo, was the recreational angler and he pulled a rifle and fired twice across the bow of the commercial fishing vessel into the water. No one was injured but FWC officers were called out. After arriving on scene, the officers secured the weapon and placed Dixon under arrest. Dixon is charged with two felonies in the altercation.

He was taken to the U.S. Coast Guard station in Islamorada and was booked into jail at around 11 a.m. on Nov. 7, 2023.

Dixon was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in public. He was later released on a $15,000 bond. No info on his court date at this time.
