When it comes to flipping heavy cover, small adjustments in line setup can make a big difference. In this video, Spencer Shuffield explains why he prefers braid with a fluorocarbon leader instead of straight braid or straight fluorocarbon.

The Alberto Knot for Flipping

Shuffield walks through the leader knot he uses to connect braid to fluorocarbon. His preferred choice is the Alberto knot. Shuffield favors the Alberto knot because it ties quickly and holds extremely well. Unlike the FG knot, which can take longer to tie, the Alberto knot is quick once you learn the process.

Why a Short Leader Matters

Leader length also plays an important role when flipping. Shuffield keeps his fluorocarbon leader around 3 to 3.5 feet long. This length ensures the leader knot stays outside the rod guides when pitching or flipping. A shorter leader helps maintain smooth presentations and prevents the knot from constantly moving through the guides. As a result, anglers can flip faster and more efficiently around cover.

Flipping Setup Details

Shuffield’s line setup focuses on strength and efficiency for fishing heavy cover. He uses 40-pound braid as his main line, which provides excellent sensitivity and cutting power around grass and vegetation. The white braid also makes it easier to see subtle line movement when fish bite on the fall. For the leader, Shuffield uses 25-pound fluorocarbon. The heavier fluorocarbon resists abrasion and handles hard hooksets around thick cover. This combination allows anglers to maintain the sensitivity of braid while adding the durability and slight stretch of fluorocarbon.
