College Angler Vogt Died from Head Injury

The Urbana Police Department is investigating the death of 21-year-old college angler and student at the University of Illinois, Bret Vogt. He was found dead early Tuesday morning on the corner of Goodwin and University Avenues in Urbana. He was transported to the hospital and he was diagnosed with a traumatic head injury. He was transferred from there to Carle Foundation Hospital and pronounced dead there at 12:01 p.m. on Wednesday.

Toxicology found alcohol in his system but the police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. More about the report can be found in this News Gazette article.

Everyone that we talked to that knew him had nothing but good things to say about him. They said he was passionate about bass fishing, would give you the shirt off his back to help you and was very active in his school’s college fishing program.

The Illini Bass Fishing Club issued a statement on their Facebook page.

FLW issued the following statement:

FLW is saddened to learn of the passing of College Fishing angler Bret Vogt, president of the Illini Bass Fishing Club. He was a talented angler and leader that had a passion for the sport of bass fishing. FLW extends its prayers and condolences to Vogt’s family, friends and teammates.

Our prayers go out to Vogt’s family, friends and those who ever fished with or against him. Another tragic loss to our younger fishing community.
