Need A Fishing Partner? There’s An App For That

The fishing world is seeing a digital shift when it comes to finding new fishing partners. One prime example is Co-Angler, a social networking app designed to ensure no fisherman needs to hit the water alone. Launched by founder John Bledsoe in 2023, the platform serves as a match maker for the angling community, specifically targeting the common dilemma where boat owners have empty seats and bank-bound anglers lack a way to get onto the water.

Bledsoe’s story began on Pomme de Terre Lake of the Ozarks, where he often fished alone and saw an opportunity to help others like him. With a background in chemistry and a deep passion for the outdoors, John pivoted to entrepreneurship. After earning a scholarship to a year-long software development program, he taught himself to code and built the first working prototype of Co-Angler.

Unlike traditional fishing apps that focus primarily on GPS mapping or catch logs, Co-Angler prioritizes human connection, allowing users to build a network of reliable partners for their next trip. The app functions through a request-and-offer system that simplifies the logistics of planning a trip. Boat owners can post their upcoming outings to find someone to help split rising fuel and bait costs, while those without watercraft can browse local listings to find a ride. To address safety concerns inherent in meeting strangers at remote boat ramps, the platform incorporates a robust system of user profiles, ratings, and reviews. This transparency allows anglers to vet potential partners based on their experience levels and past behavior.

Beyond simple ride-sharing, Co-Angler hopes to promote mentorship culture within the recreational fishing scene. By connecting seasoned pros with newcomers, the app helps spread fishing knowledge and skill that was previously confined to expensive charters or exclusive clubs. Features like the “Open to Fish” status allow for spontaneous local meetups, making the sport more accessible to those with unpredictable schedules or those new to an area.

As the platform continues to grow, it could become a vital tool for making fishing more affordable to the everyday angler. By lowering the barrier to entry for non-boat owners and easing the financial burden for vessel owners, the app is helping to sustain a hobby and sport in a tightening economy. Whether it’s a high-stakes bass event or a quiet morning on a kayak, Co-Angler connects anglers — and that’s a benefit for the whole outdoor community.
