Kayak angler Ryon Mora died during a Bass Angler Magazine (BAM) Tournament Trail event on May 17 at Lake Almanor in Plumas County, California. He was 38.
“The day began like any other tournament morning, under cloudy skies and a light 3 – 4 mph breeze,” stated a release from BAM. “At 6:37 a.m., BAM Tournament Director Michael Bray received an urgent call reporting an unmanned kayak on the lake. BAM staff, including CEO Mark Lassagne, immediately responded to the GPS location provided and located Ryon Mora in the water at approximately 6:42 a.m.”
Mora, who was wearing personal flotation device (PFD), was quickly pulled aboard the BAM media boat and was unresponsive, the release says. Bystanders called 911 immediately and CPR was performed while Mora was transported to emergency responders. Paramedics met Mora at the dock at 6:47 a.m. and worked for 45 minutes attempting to revive him. He could not be resuscitated.
“Yesterday was a tough day for the kayak fishing community,” said fellow angler Shane Jones in a social media post. “My heart is heavy, and my prayers go out to Ryon’s family, his friends, everyone involved in the rescue efforts, and all the anglers on the circuit whose lives he touched. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain with us on the water.”
Mora’s cause of death has not yet been determined and is currently under investigation by the Plumas County Sheriff’s Department.
“In response to the tragic loss, the event was immediately canceled,” BAM stated. “An update regarding the BAM Kayak Series schedule will be shared in the coming days.
“Ryon was a respected competitor, fellow sportsman, and beloved friend to many in the kayak fishing community. He took all proper safety precautions and was participating in a sanctioned event. This heartbreaking incident is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the outdoors.
“The entire BAM family extends our deepest condolences to Ryon’s loved ones. We ask that the community join us in keeping his family in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
BAM says further updates will be made available pending official release from the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office.
