Expert grass fisherman Todd Faircloth stresses that mat fishing requires you to fish fast to find bass scattered on large mat-covered flats. Slow down and work an area more thoroughly once you contact fish or find some sort of anomaly like woody cover, holes and breaks in the mat or change in vegetation type. Edges and cover changes often concentrate fish.
Many anglers overlook that bass often position with their back tight to the underside of the mat. Todd shares a tip to target these fish that often get missed when you’re on a punch through, pound bottom, repeat program.
