It’s a common occurrence for smallmouth bass to start gathering in huge schools in late summer/early fall, as evidenced in this video. The trend continues right through the winter months, and is often referred to as the fall consolidation. The fall spares with the prespawn for the title of best bass fishing of the year for both numbers and size, but unlike the prespawn, it’s normal to have the water to yourself as fisherman trade rods for bows and guns.
