Lowrance’s StructureScan (side imaging) is a well-known and powerful sonar technology for looking off to the sides of your boat, but overlaying this data on top of mapping yields additional insight. Lowrance Product Line Director, Lucas Steward, explains the fishing application of this technology. In short, mapping shows us structure through the use of contour lines, but side imaging shows us cover like boulders and woody cover as well as bottom hardness and transition zones. StructureScan overlay displays in real-time when activated, but you can also save overlays for future use. A powerful use of this feature is waypoint marking key cover like trees or boulders and then being able to make precise casts to the cover, as it’s displayed right there on top of the contours.
