3 Tournament Boats Sink on Wheeler Lake

A scary situation unfolded this morning, January 4, on popular Wheeler Lake in Alabama. According to Alabama State Troopers, three boats participating in the Winter Blues catfish tournament capsized due to rough water. The incidents occurred shortly after the start of the tournament. Initially, six boats were unaccounted for.

The boats launched from Ingalls Harbor and rescue crews were called to assist. Three boats were found while the other three had already capsized. The tournament was canceled afterwards and has been rescheduled. Fortunately there were no injuries and everyone has been reported safe.

According to our friend and full-time Alabama bass fishing guide Jimmy Mason, that stretch of water is extremely dangerous when combined with the recent heavy current and strong northwest winds ahead of a nearby cold front.

The current weather conditions in that area are 18 mph winds and 48 degrees.
