Six Best of Show awards for the Shimano/G.Loomis group at the 2013 ICAST awards. We don’t put a lot of stock into the Best of Show awards but it’s still pretty impressive to see the hardware on the table like that.

Shimano released a few new spinning and baitcasting reels for 2014 as well as some rain gear. Here is what caught our eye:

Shimano CI4+

This new reel series comes in both baitcaster and spinning models. The CI4+ spinning has the X-Ship technology built into them. This was best illustrated to us with the two reels they had on display that had 4 pound weights hanging off the spool to mimic tension from a fighting fish. The old CI4 was able to reel but it was tough to turn it like it was under load. Then we did the same with the CI4+ and it turned just as easy as reeling in your lure. Pretty eye opening to see it in action.

Besides X-Ship the reel features a completely carbon fiber makeup with their CI4 material. There is no metal so rust is not an option. It’s light and strong with no flex on the stem. The reel is very smooth and the dual cross carbon drag system seemed really smooth to us. It comes in 4 sizes from 1000 to 4000.

The Chronarch CI4+ features 7 ball bearings, X-Ship strength, in a Carbon fiber frame with Carbon fiber side plates. It makes the reel light in your hand and it’s very palmable. It also features the Cross Carbon drag washers and it comes in in 7.6:1 and 6.2:1 speeds. It’s approved for saltwater use thanks to the carbon materials.

Dryfender Rain Gear

This new rain gear from Shimano features breathable material that is seam sealed and insulated. It has pockets on the jacket that are zipper and sealed as well as arm enclosures and inner gaiter to keep you warm.

The bibs can have the suspenders removed to make them pants and feature zipper sealed pockets with plier holders on the outside and a gusseted crotch.

Symetre FL

I like this reel because I’ve had some Symetre reels for many years that still work great. It’s a $99 spinning reel that features a graphite frame, aluminum spool, 5 bearings and comes in 5 sizes. The impressive thing is it comes in 6:1 and 6.2:1 gear ratios in the 1000 and 2500 spool sizes. That’s pretty good speed in an affordable spinning reel.
