Some say the spinnerbait and the jig cannot be made better. The same has been said about the Yamamoto Senko and the Lunker City Sluggo but Berkley believes everything can be made better. Their team of bait experts and a tireless team of professional anglers agree with them.

New for 2009 is a new bait from Berkley called the Power Slug. It’s a 6 inch Sluggo style bait that the bait junkies at Wired2Fish believe is a cross between the Zoom Fluke and the original Sluggo. The design is well thought out and the action is very unique

The lateral angles on this bait run the the length of the bait tapering to a rounded tail. There are also two parallel angular lines on the top of the bait as well. Fished weightless this bait darts and slides well and falls horizontally. A 2 1/4 slot on the underside of the bait starts one inch from the head and we found a 4/0 or 5/0 offset hook works exceptionally well without ill effect.

The bait is heavy enough to be thrown long distances without additional weight and this bait works well around fry in post spawn and around vegetation as well.

Fished with a weighted hook like the Mr. Blitz or the Falcon Weighted hook allows the bait to sink faster and is perfect for holes in the vegetation and through blowdowns. Of course it is in the Power Bait family so when fish grab it they don’t let go.

The Inside Story

The Power Slug will come in a 7 count bag and colors include Arkansas Shiner, Baby Bass, Black, Black Blue Laminate, Pearl White. Pumpkinseed, Red Shad and the General which is a reddish bait with green fleck.

Besides the techniques mentioned above we fished it with a lead head on light line and also Texas rigged with a 1/4 ounce weight and heavy line. It made a great flipping bait.

The Power Slug will be formally introduced at ICAST in July.
