Reports started coming in late last night that James “Jimmy” Johnson from Ganado, Texas was shot and killed Sunday night, Oct. 13 in Jackson, Miss. in a Motel 6 parking lot. The 56-year-old Texas angler was in Mississippi practicing for the final Central Division BASS Open on Ross Barnett Reservoir. There aren’t many details yet other than Johnson apparently found someone burglarizing his boat and was shot in the subsequent confrontation. As we get more details, we’ll share them.

The notes we’ve seen on forums and Facebook posts show that Jimmy was well liked and respected as an angler. Prayers for all who knew him.

  1. This is terrible and shocking news. Never put this into my mind as a worry when my husband went on the road to fish. Our prayers go out to Jimmy’s family and friends.

  2. My prayers go out to the family of this wonderful human being. May God Bless you and help you through this time of sorrow.

  3. I had the pleasure to fish with Jimmy Johnson on the final day of the 2011 BASS Central Open on Table Rock Lake where he finished 9th place overall in the tournament. Jimmy was a great guy and I had a great time fishing with him during that tournament. Prayers go out to his family for their loss.

  4. it’s sad when crack heads have to go around stealing fishing gear from a man that loves to fish & has made it a long way on the tour. My prayers go out to the family. My prayer also goes out to the murderer who took a innocent life. May God turn your life around & turn yourself in.

  5. Just horrible…… Just because you own something, some *ss hole jerk thinks he should have it or needs to steal it for money or drugs. My condolences to his family. I really hope they catch the guy……..

  6. My prayers are truly with the family I give my condolences and I hope and pray they catch this dirty fool that did it and that justice is served.

  7. I here more and more about Breaking into boats at motels at the big tournaments. I would like to see Motels offer a night security guard when the tournaments are in town. They could charge a little more for the rooms and it might stop if criminals see a security guard.
