NEW for 2012 REVO STX BAITCASTER
Lighter. Lower. Better.
These are all common descriptions we see on new product announcements, especially when it comes to fishing reels. We've seen our fair share of monumental reel launches that really leave you wondering where the cheese slid off the sandwich. So we take a lot of these new releases with a grain of salt anymore. And re-vamping of current lines is met with even more skepticism. Take a brand I love and change it and release a new version and my skepticism is through the roof.
But occasionally we're privy to sneak peaks of new products coming down the pike that really get us excited as not only fishing tackle junkies but avid anglers who spend hundreds of hours on the water every year in brutal conditions and really can't afford to be fighting with failing equipment. If I spend a pretty penny for tackle, it has got to last in less than "ideal conditions."
We were in Columbia, S. C. meeting with the folks from Abu Garcia and they were really excited to show us the new line of Revos that will hit retail shelves this fall. The totally designed from scratch new line of Revos boast some incredible new features that quite frankly, appear to live up to the hype for a change. Mind you I'm still using Revos that I was given prior to the original Revo launch some six years ago.
The entire Revo line including the Revo S, SX, STX, Winch, Inshore and Premier as well as new additions on the spinning side including the Revo S, SX and Inshore are designed to be lighter, lower profile, tougher and more efficient as well as offer new qualities like an amazing true 8:1 gear ratio.
NEW for 2012 REVO SX SPINNING
The reels actually sit lower on the rod now even though they have a much larger gear housing to enclose the new D2 second generation Duragears. These new oversized gears give you more efficient cranking power for more control over your lures and your fish without as much effort and torque on you the angler.
The weight is reduced up to 29 percent in some of the reels. You're talking about taking a third of the weight out of a reel that wasn't that heavy to begin with. Then they lowered the reels 17 percent. They put the gear box lower on the reel overlapping it on the rod more. The result is you get a much smaller feeling reel in your hand and it makes it so much easier to hold for hours on end.
We were fortunate to already receive models to start testing and reviewing. So far we're just totally jacked about the new features and how light the reels make all our combos feel. But they have fished flawlessly right out of the box. We'll have a lot more "nuts and bolts" examination and review of the reels over the next couple of months but thought you guys would want to check them out now.
Probably the best news out of today's announcement is a new promotion to put the new Revos in the hands of everyday anglers like you through their giveaway promotion in Bassmaster Magazine and online. Every issue of the July edition of Bassmaster Magazine will have a Revo insert in it with a chance to become an instant winner of the golden Revo ticket a la Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Ok. It's not really gold but the prize will be worth more than gold to some diehard anglers. If you don't win instantly with that insert, you can signup online for another shot at winning. Pretty cool that folks will be winning new Revos before you can even buy them. You can find out more about the reels, the giveaways and the new Revo Revolution at AbuGarcia.com/Revo.
