Swindle's 2012 Bass Fishing Boat Wrap1/30/2012 2:44:27 PM

Gerald "The G-Man" Swindle has been a favorite among bass fishing fans for years. He's a great angler and his quick wit and extreme passion for the sport of bass fishing make him a great person to hang around with and talk fishing or whatever else might be spinning through his brain at a thousand miles per hour.

He just picked up his boat for the 2012 Bassmaster Elite Series season and the 2012 Classic at the Red River in Shreveport, La. in 3 weeks. The wrap is similar to last year with a slightly different design pattern and some additional logos on the wrap.

New Shad Walker Sneak Peek1/30/2012 7:39:22 AM

We just returned from the Bass University in Chicago, and it was a big-time hit. Great information on techniques, seasonal patterns and baits from the likes of Kevin Short, Mike Iaconelli, Pete Gluszek, Randy Howell, Ott DeFoe and Fred Roumbanis. Each showcased their area of expertise and baits of choice for lakes, river systems and tidal waters. They also gave some killer tips on rigging and we got to look at several prototype lures from companies like Molix and Picasso.

Fred Roumbanis gave us an in-depth look at a new topwater walking bait that fishes like a frog in heavy cover but also can be fished in open water. Its called a Shad Walker from Picasso. This soft hollow-bodied baitfish imitator has a weighted tail, sharp double hook and a strategically designed drain hole to allow water to escape. It is designed to be fished in heavy slop but works well in open water too.

"I have fished this bait a lot," Roumbanis said. "The action is different than a frog's, and it can easily be walked on the top in open water. Some of the early versions I used in testing are pretty battle weary as the bass smashed them."

Harris Wins Western Everstart on Shasta1/29/2012 12:13:46 AM

Photo by Gary Mortenson, courtesy of FLWOutdoors.com

K.C. Harris of Shasta Lake, Calif., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 11 pounds, 1 ounce Saturday to win the EverStart Series Western Division event on Lake Shasta with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 42 pounds, 2 ounces. For his victory, Harris earned $29,918.

“Usually the wind plays into my strategy,” Harris said. “But this week, I was not really keen on the wind. I guess I really can't complain at all though. I fished last year's EverStart event and I didn't do very well, so now I'm doing great after today. It was tough, but overall, the bag sizes today were about what I expected to see.

“I had one key area that I fished for half of the day each day,” Harris continued. “Once I would get a limit, then I would go run points and other structure looking for a good bite. I was fishing anywhere from 5 to 15 feet for the most part. If I needed a fish, I would go out to 30 feet sometimes, and I could usually pull a couple out.

“I threw the Alabama rig all week,” Harris went on to say. “I had it rigged up with a Trout Ghost-colored All American Trash Fish, and I also threw it rigged it with Mother's Finest baits. I also threw Top-Shelf Swimbaits and Osprey 7 inch swimbaits, but I got my better fish on the Alabama rig. I can't wait for Clear Lake.”

Rounding out the top 10 pros were:

        2nd: Zack Thompson, Alameda, Calif., 15 bass, 41-5, $10,257
3rd: Jason Milligan, Shasta Lake, Calif., 15 bass, 37-7, $8,548

OSU Wins College Fishing Event on Shasta1/29/2012 12:01:00 AM

The Oregon State University team of Zach MacDonald, of Willits, Calif. and William Sparks, of Corvallis, Ore. won the National Guard FLW College Fishing West Conference event on Lake Shasta Saturday with five bass weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces. The victory earned the team $5,000. The win also helped them advance to the West Conference Regional Championship.

“We battled the wind all day today,” said Sparks, a marine biology major. “We shot all over the place, every little nook we could find. The fishing was slow, and very tough. We were fishing really shallow today. We were marking a whole bunch of fish, but we just couldn't get them to bite. The fish that we did get were up in about 15 feet.

“We caught two fish right away,” Sparks continued. “One with a drop-shot rig and one on a pumpkin football jig. Then it really slowed down for us. Our boat broke down and we had to use the trolling motor to come in a few minutes earlier than we would have liked to. But I guess it worked out for us.”

“This morning we were able to find a little spot where it was calmer and we caught our first two, but after 30 minutes it just died,” said MacDonald, a fisheries and wildlife major. “The wind was really a factor for most of the day and it threw us off some spots that we wanted to fish.”

“Our motor broke down too,” MacDonald went on to say. “We had to fish off of our trolling motor this afternoon, so we found a spot close to the marina. We were able to catch our last two fish back-to-back on our last casts of the day using green-pumpkin jigs. We're definitely looking forward to regionals.”

Rounding out the top five teams and also advancing to the West Regional Championship are:

2nd: University of California-Santa Cruz – Chris Rhoden and Sam Sayad, both of Santa Cruz, Calif. (five bass, 9-00, $1,500)
3rd: Humboldt State University – Hideaki Kubo, Arcata, Calif., and Ben Smith, Samoa, Calif. (five bass, 8-7, $1,000)
4th: Eastern Washington University – Jarred Walker, Cheney, Wash., and Robert Trukositz, Spokane, Wash. (five bass, 8-5, $1,000)
5th: California State University-Long Beach – Alex Cox and Justin Gangel, both of Long Beach, Calif. (five bass, 8-1, $1,000)

Lane, Brown Win PAA Team Tourney on Toho1/28/2012 5:58:55 PM

PAA Communications

Spiderwire pro Bobby Lane has a pretty good memory for where fish are in a lake, where a specific piece of cover or structure may have a wrinkle and what to do to catch a fish based on years of experience.

He’s also kept a tally of his big tournament finishes in Florida, and his home state hasn’t been too good to him.

“I was second here a year ago to Gerald Swindle, I finished third in another one, second in another, and had several other thirds, fourths and fifths,” Lane said. “This is a good feeling, a really good feeling. These fish owed me and owed me for several years. Now we got the best of ‘em this week.”

That “we” reference was to himself and his team partner, Gene Larew Baits pro Gerald Brown of Oklahoma. They joined forces along with 17 other teams in the inaugural Bass Pro Shops PAA Tour Team Challenge on Lake Toho.

At stake were more than $100,000 in cash and prizes including two new Nitro Z-8 and Z-7 boats with Mercury 225 Optimax and XS outboards, T-H Marine Atlas jackplate, Minn Kota Talon shallow water anchors and PAA Tournament Series points toward the PAA Angler of the Year title and qualification for the Toyota Texas Bass Classic championship.

Lane and Brown won the Nitro Z-8 with Mercury Optimax along with the Talons for the Minn Kota/Humminbird Big Bass award. Lane’s fat 10.59-pounder caught Thursday held up, and he added a 10.02-pounder Friday.

“This was an awesome week,” Brown said. “I really can’t explain it. I learned a lot from Bobby, and we had a great time out there.”

Phoenix Boats pro and founder Gary Clouse teamed with Culprit pro John Kremer of Florida for second place. They finished with 60.47 pounds after catching Saturday’s best limit of 24.94 pounds on Culprit 10-inch worms.

Jasper Engines pro Chad Morgenthaler of Illinois and Evinrude pro Glenn Browne ofFloridawere third with 60.11. They led after the first day with a stunning 31.89 pounds, the best of the tournament, but struggled the final two days in their top area.

Brown, Lane mixed it up

Running more than 35 miles to Lake Kissimmee from the Lakefront Park launch on the north end of Toho, Lane and Brown pulled into their lily pad field Saturday morning and found traffic.

“It looked like a big convention going on in there,” Brown said. “There were probably 12-15 other boats in there, everyone just fishing, and we eased around and caught two before the sun got up good.”

That’s when they went sight fishing for a couple of bigger bass Lane said they located Friday. But they didn’t find them, and windy conditions played a bit of a factor Saturday. They brought in a limit weighing 14.99 pounds but needed just 10 to knock off Clouse and Kremer.

Lane and Brown threw 11-inch Gene Larew El Salto worms and a 3.5-inch saltwater minnow, along with Berkley Craw Fatty pitch baits, Grass Pig swimbaits and Texas-rigged straight-tail worms. They stuck with darker colors in Okeechobee, green pumpkin/red and junebug/red.

“It got tougher Saturday,” Lane said. “But we hung in there and picked around to get whatever we could. This one’s pretty special.”

Clouse, Kremer tossed worms

Working an area of vegetation about 100 yards by 50 yards wide, Kremer and Clouse threw junebug-colored 10-inch Culprit worms all week.

“We had them on quarter-ounce sinkers and 15-pound test line,” said Kremer, a noted tournament stick in central Florida. “It was just a matter of putting it out there and working it slowly, which is typical for this time of year.”

Spawning bass in the Kissimmee grass aren’t known for much chasing, so a near-deadstick presentation is almost always a good bet in January. Casting or pitching to holes and letting it sit is a favored tactic.

“We worked them so slowly that John made me take off the reel handle when I’d make a cast and then ask for it back when it was time to make another one,” Clouse joked. “He really put on a clinic out there with the worm. We had a great day.”

Lane and Brown Take Lead in PAA Team Tourney on Toho1/27/2012 7:07:38 PM

PAA Communications (photos by Chris Dutton)

Spiderwire pro Bobby Lane of Florida and Gene Larew pro Gerald Brown of Oklahoma weighed 23.20 pounds Friday to jump into the lead of the Bass Pro Shops PAA Tour Team Challenge on LakeToho.

Brown and Lane brought in another double-digit lunker - at 10.02 pounds - to anchor their catch of 49.65 pounds. They have a slim margin of just more than a pound over first-day leaders Evinrude pro Glenn Browne of Florida and Jasper Engines pro Chad Morgenthaler of Illinois, who have 48.23 pounds.

Close behind are the Missouri team of Bass Pro Shops pro Brian Snowden and TheGreatOutdoors.com pro Jeff Hager, who have 40.75 pounds.

"We battled the weather and had just two good bites, but found another area with some fish in it so we'll go back there Saturday," said Lane, who lives in Lakeland and has fished the central Florida lakes all his life. He and Brown are locking into Lake Kissimmee.

The field was greeted by gusting wind and spitting rain Friday morning. The rain subsided mid-morning but the wind continued most of the day. The front finally moved out of the area about 5 p.m. Sun and clear skies are expected for Saturday's final round.

Eighteen teams featuring some of the top pros in the sport are competing in the PAA’s season-opening event. More than $100,000 in cash and prizes is at stake, including a Nitro Z-8 with a Mercury 225 Optimax and T-H Marine Atlas jackplate, Nitro Z-7 with a Mercury Pro XS, and MinnKota Talon shallow water anchors for the big bass winners. Also at stake are points toward the PAA Angler of the Year title and qualification for the Toyota Texas Bass Classic world championship in September on Lake Conroe.

Saturday's final launch will be at 7 a.m. at Lakefront Park in Kissimmee, with the free weigh-in at 4:30 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops off of International Drive in Orlando.

Brown, Lane running long

With years of experience with Florida’s quick storm systems, Lane wasn’t worried Friday morning about the wind and rain that blew in overnight.

“It’s 60-something degrees,” he said. “It’s not going to bother them. It just makes it a little tougher to talk to the fish.”

Lane and Brown are running about 37 miles into Lake Kissimmee, where they are mixing up sight-fishing and casting. They were tight-lipped about any details but are glad the weather will be better Saturday.

“It was miserable first thing,” Lane said. “But then it got a little better. Saturday may be a little tougher. We’ll have to try to grind it out early.”

Browne, Morgenthaler confident

After taking the first-day lead with 31.89 pounds, Browne and Morgenthaler returned to their best area – their only area, unless they have a secret backup – and mined it for 16.34 pounds to stay in the hunt.

That’s about what was expected considering the weather, they said. They’re working a shallow flat with grass where bass are bedding but haven’t really camped out in it. They made one good pass Thursday and then the wind created tough sight-fishing and pitching conditions Friday.

“I think the outside of it might have gotten a little trashed but not too badly inside,” Browne said. “If the wind lays down and the sun shines good, we’ll have a shot.”

Morgenthaler said even with their Power Poles planted, it still was tough Friday.

“We haven’t beaten up on it because we blew through so fast,” he said. “I really hoped we could put it away or get on up there, but we couldn’t. We’ll give it another shot pretty hard Saturday and see what happens.”

Snowden, Hager consistent

A catch of 17.68 pounds, including an 8.40-pounder, kept Snowden and Hager in the hunt with one day left.

They’re also working some bedding fish and mixing up a little offshore action for pre- and post-spawners. They had 23.07 on the first day and, with one or two bites capable of making a difference, are happy with the consistency.

“Hopefully if the wind lays down we’ll be allright,” Snowden said.

Hendrick, Eaker move up

Consistency factored in for TheGreatOutdoors.com pro David Hendrick and Bojangles pro Guy Eaker with a solid 20.92-pound limit.

That was the second-biggest of the day, putting them in fourth place. They’re about 10 pounds out of the lead.

Eaker said he lost two giants, estimated at 9-10 pounds each. One broke his 20-pound test line and the other came unhooked at the boat just outside the net.

Bebber, Wilkerson grinding

After a solid first day of 28.22 pounds, Tiremax pros Charles Bebber and Chris Wilkerson of Texas had a disappointing plunge with just 7.81 pounds.

As longtime sticks in the Texas team and regional circuits, they’re not completely disheartened. Bebber said Wilkerson “is one of the best sight-fishemen I know” and their  cohesiveness will keep them in the chase Saturday.

“We put all our eggs in the sight-fishing basket and knew the weather would throw us a curve ball,” Bebber said, “but we didn’t think it would be this much of a curve.”

Eggner Ferry Bridge Collapses on Kentucky Lake1/26/2012 9:44:20 PM

The Delta Mariner tow boat reportedly struck an unlit section of the Eggner Ferry bridge (68/80) near KenLake Marina on Kentucky Lake late this evening. The section of the bridge where the barge hit has collapsed now. So far no injuries or casualties have been reported and no automobiles were on the bridge when it collapsed. This will have a major impact on residents as there are only really three places to cross more than 120 miles of the Kentucky Lake section of the Tennessee River.

We'll try to get photos tomorrow, but we want to stay out of work crews way this evening as authorities have closed the area to both boats and automobiles this evening. Hopefully no one was hurt or will be hurt from this accident.

More from the local NBC affiliate can be seen on WpsdLocal6.com.

Morgenthaler, Browne Surge Into Lead on Toho1/26/2012 6:41:35 PM

The area on Lake Toho exceeded the expectations of Evinrude pro Glenn Browne of Florida and Jasper Engines pro Chad Morgenthaler of Illinois.

Whether it will hold up for two more days is the big unknown.

Browne and Morgenthaler grabbed the lead Thursday of the Bass Pro Shops PAA Tour Team Challenge with a five-bass limit weighing 31.89 pounds. Among their catch were 7.98- and 8.41-pounders, all caught in an area they slipped into on the final day of practice.

“We went in there Wednesday and had a good feeling about catching 20 pounds or so, but not 30,” said Browne, who attended the University of Central Florida not too far from Toho’s famed shores. “I think we probably culled 16 or 17 pounds.

“We’re in a good area and probably will beat up on it,” Browne added. “We only made one pass through there, so I don’t think we hurt it too badly.”

Eighteen teams featuring some of the top pros in the sport are competing in the PAA’s season-opening event. The full field will compete all three days, with more than $100,000 in cash and prizes at stake, including a Nitro Z-8 with a Mercury 225 Optimax and T-H Marine Atlas jackplate, Nitro Z-7 with a Mercury Pro XS, and MinnKota Talon shallow water anchors for the big bass winners. Also at stake are points toward the PAA Angler of the Year title and qualification for the Toyota Texas Bass Classic world championship in September on Lake Conroe.

Morning launches are at Lakefront Park in Kissimmee, with Friday’s 3 p.m. weigh-in at the park. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be at 4:30 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops off of International Drive in Orlando.

Right behind Brown and Morgenthaler are TireMax pros Charles Bebber and Chris Wilkerson of Texas with 28.22 pounds. In third place are Spiderwire pro Bobby Lane of Florida and Gene Larew Baits pro Gerald Brown of Oklahoma with 26.45 pounds.

Lane and Brown had the big bass of the day, at 10.59 pounds, which led a parade of 6- to 9-pounders from several pros. Typhoon pro Cliff Pirch of Arizona and Executive Realty pro James Watson of Missouri got on the board first Thursday with an 8.85-pounder, the first reported bass of the tournament.

“They’ll bite if you find them,” said Pirch, who caught the big one on a Yamamoto Baits Senko. “The wind blew about 100 mph and it got harder to see them.”

Watson said he was spooked about taking the first shot at the big fish and gave Pirch the honors.

“I told him I was paranoid about casting on the first one,” Watson said, laughing. “She bit on his third cast after spitting out the bait the first two times.”

Bebber, Wilkinson were hot

It didn’t take long for the Texas tornadoes to put their limit in the boat.

“We had that (limit) by 10 a.m. and spent the day looking,” Bebber said. “The conditions weren’t too good for finding them, but we found a few. We were just picking up a few here and there.”

The pair said they had several other good fish on target but didn’t go for the motherlode Thursday.

“We’re trying to manage them a little bit,” Wilkerson said. “There’s no giants but there are some decent ones.”

Lane, Brown shined late

Brown and Lane, known for his topwater frog skills and sight-fishing abilities, got on some good fish early and then they moved around.

“The big one bit later in the day,” Lane said. “It got a little tougher as the day went along.”

Brown said he’s known Lane for years but hasn’t had the chance to fish with him before in a tournament. All of the pros said the team format has been not only fun, but a learning experience as they combined their strategy and knowledge for one goal.

“It’s amazing,” Brown said. “I knew he knew the lake really well, but didn’t fully realize just how good he is with casting and everything. I’ve really learned a lot this week and it’s been a great experience.”

Rapala, B.A.S.S. Offer Monthly Photo Contest1/26/2012 3:08:55 PM

B.A.S.S. member Adam Tucker did it. Now B.A.S.S. LLC and Rapala are challenging other anglers to “snap to it” and enter the 2012 Rapala Photo Contest.

For the best snapshot, a monthly winner will receive six Rapala lures and recognition in Bassmaster magazine. The photo must be of an angler with a bass caught on a Rapala lure. Fish size doesn’t matter, but photo quality does, and the Rapala lure used to land the fish must be visible in the photo. B.A.S.S. judges will select the month’s best submission based solely on those criteria. (Hint: make sure the digital camera is set to a fairly large file size because a tiny file can’t be turned into a magazine photo.)

Entering is easy. Anglers need only to email their digital photos to “facebook@bassmaster.com” with the subject line “2012 Rapala Photo Contest.”

Each month’s winners will not only appear in the pages of Bassmaster, but also in the dedicated Rapala album that will soon go up on the B.A.S.S. Facebook page (www.facebook.com/bass). Tucker, January’s winner who had his photo published in the February issue of Bassmaster, will also be able to see his photo in the online album.

“This contest is pure fun for B.A.S.S. members and other anglers,” said Kelly Brockpahler, Rapala’s director of marketing. “All it takes to enter is a digital snapshot and one email, and an angler has a chance to win a selection of six Rapala bass lures hand-picked by our pros.”

The six lures are a DT, X-Rap, Shad Rap, Clackin’ Rap, Rippin’ Rap and X-Rap Shad.

FLW Signs RMC BoatWorks as Newest Fishing Sponor1/25/2012 3:37:56 PM

FLW announced it has reached an agreement with RMC BoatWorksTM to become the newest sponsor of FLW for the 2012 season. RMC BoatWorks will be given exposure across all platforms of FLW, including its tournaments, expos, multiple websites and magazines.

RMC BoatWorks is best known for their Trol-Lok™ trolling motor mount which has been designed to securely hold trolling motors in place under any conditions, preventing damage to both the trolling motor and the boat. They also feature an array of mounts and plates designed to keep equipment in place and offer added protection to anglers’ boats.

“RMC BoatWorks is a natural fit for FLW. Our anglers spend a lot of time in some of the roughest conditions imaginable,” said Kathy Fennel, President of FLW Operations Division. “Having a product like RMC Trol-Lok™ available gives them peace of mind that when running their boats in rough water their trolling motor will be usable and in one piece when they get to their destination. Every cast counts in tournament fishing; the RMC Trol-Lok™ allows anglers those extra casts that can make a big difference.”

“At RMC BoatWorks we are committed to helping anglers of all levels protect their expensive equipment no matter what conditions they encounter,” said Brad Rightnour, owner and founder of RMC BoatWorks. “Our pro staff signifies the value and integrity of our products. .
In his career to date, Roumbanis has earned $846,776 and qualified for the Bassmaster Classic twice.  He has posted paychecks in nearly 60-percent of the tournaments he has entered; 12 times finishing in the top 10.  His career B.A.S.S highlights include two wins; the 2007 Bassmaster Memorial Major on North Carolina's High Rock Lake, and the  2008 Elite Series Carolina Clash on South Carolina's Lake Murray.

Win a Fishing Trip with Kevin Van Dam1/24/2012 12:17:00 AM

A fishing outing with Kevin VanDam is a rare prize, but it’s being offered in a sweepstakes happening now at Bassmaster.com.

The “Fish with a Pro” sweepstakes winner will be given the opportunity to meet up with the world’s best bass angler, KVD, for a morning on the water in July. They will hit a lake near Orlando, Fla., site of the vacation for two that the sweepstakes winner can enjoy at the same time.

The Florida vacation prize includes round-trip airfare, car rental, three days and three nights for two at an Orlando-area hotel, two one-day Walt Disney World Park Passes and $500. Total estimated retail value of the prize package is $4,995.

Entries will be accepted at Bassmaster.com through Jan. 31. No purchase is necessary to enter or to win; up to one entry per person will be accepted each day of the sweepstakes. If they elect to do so, entrants can join B.A.S.S. and enter the sweepstakes at the same time by filling out one form. A $15 annual membership includes one year of Bassmaster Magazine, tournament eligibility, a free tackle bag and more.

The lucky sweepstakes winner will be randomly selected from all entries and notified by mail.

“When we were putting the sweepstakes together, we decided to go for it and give the winner the trip of a lifetime,” said Bruce Akin, chief executive officer of B.A.S.S. LLC. “I think most people will readily agree that a fishing outing with Kevin is exactly that.”

VanDam is a Bassmaster Elite Series pro with accomplishments that stand as tall as the lanky angler himself. For starters, he is the reigning Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year, a title he’s owned for the past four years and seven times over the course of his career. He’s also a four-time Bassmaster Classic winner, including in 2011. (That makes him the defending champ for the upcoming 2012 Classic, Feb. 24-26 on the Red River out of Shreveport-Bossier City, La.) VanDam has landed 20 Bassmaster wins and posted 96 Top 10 finishes for an earnings total of more than $5 million — from Bassmaster events alone.

The sweepstakes winner will have his or her chance to get to know the bass fishing superstar on July 10, the date set for the fishing outing. Because that date happens to fall just weeks before the final event of the 2012 regular Bassmaster Elite Series season, VanDam could be on his approach to a fifth consecutive Angler of the Year title. Only Roland Martin with his nine titles can claim to best VanDam on that score. VanDam, however, is the only pro to rack up four in a row.

And thus it could happen that the sweepstakes winner shares a boat with KVD on the cusp of setting another record: five consecutive Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year crowns.

Complete sweepstakes rules and an entry form are easily accessed by clicking through the sweepstakes icon found on the home page of Bassmaster.com.

Lane Wins Big on Harris Chain Bassmaster Open1/21/2012 6:30:39 PM

Chris Lane of Guntersville, Ala., made it look easy on Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes in the kick-off event of the 2012 Bass Pro Shops Southern Open series. As the only angler to weigh in 20 or more pounds of bass each day on the way to his third B.A.S.S. win with a three-day total of 72-11 pounds. Clifford Pirch of Payson, Ariz., finished second with 58-1.

Citing the need to slow down and fish his areas thoroughly, Lane used a variety of baits to claim the title and a provisional berth in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees, Feb. 22-24. If Lane fishes the remaining two events in the Southern Open season, he’ll cement the spot in bass fishing’s greatest championship.

“I caught fish on several soft plastics, including 7-inch Gambler Sweebo worms, Gambler Cane Toads and the Gambler Big Easy, but I found my bass with a chartreuse Lucky Strike RC2 crankbait,” Lane said. “I used it as a search bait. When I found bass with it, I’d pick up the soft plastics and really work the area over.”

Despite having a five-pound lead going into the final round, Lane had a scare on Saturday morning. After catching a couple of small keepers, his co-angler caught two bass weighing a cumulative 15 pounds on consecutive casts.

“I was rattled,” Lane admitted, “but I knew what I had to do. I was making mistakes, and I needed to slow down.”

And he did. Lane’s next bass was his best of the day, a lunker that inhaled a Sweebo worm. When the day was over, his best five weighed 28-5, good enough for the Lucky Strike heavyweight of the tournament.

Day Three’s big bass belonged Keith Carson of Debary, Fla., and weighed 9-13.

Avery McCormick of Mobile, Ala., had the lead on the co-angler side on Days One and Two despite not catching a limit (3 bass for co-anglers) on either of the first two days. It caught up with him in the final round. He had just one bass and it weighed only 14 ounces.

Michael Bradford of Scottsboro, Ala., saw McCormick’s stumble as an opportunity. His three-day total of 27-9 earned him $35,000 in cash and merchandise, including a Triton-Mercury boat and motor package.

Medlock Wins Everstart Series on Lake Okeechobee1/21/2012 5:30:24 PM

Brandon Medlock of Lake Placid, Fla., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the EverStart Series Southeast Division event presented by Mercury on Lake Okeechobee with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 68 pounds, 2 ounces. For his victory, Medlock earned $35,000.

“I am shocked,” said Medlock who won for the second year in a row. “I was shocked last year when I won and I’m even more shocked this year. It’s a little unbelievable.

“I was surprised a little bit by this week’s weights, I really thought it was going to take 80 pounds to win,” Medlock went on to say. “When I came in on the first day with a little over 17 pounds I thought I had blown the tournament completely. Yesterday was a phenomenal day for me with the 35-pound sack. I made all the right decisions and it paid off. I don’t think there was one thing that I did wrong yesterday. Everything went my way, it was incredible.

“I was flipping all week with my dad’s jig, the Medlock Jig, and using Gambler Crickets. That’s really it, nothing special. I covered a lot of water, staying in places less than an hour. The first day I wasted five hours in one area because of the wind, but the last two days I was able to move around a lot more and I think that really helped. I was targeting very specific stuff and if it didn’t look right I moved on. I will be fishing the FLW Tour Open in a few weeks so I don’t really want to talk a lot about what I was targeting.

Medlock believes that the FLW Tour Open, which takes place on Lake Okeechobee February 9-12, will be another record breaking weight tournament. He along with many of the other pros that fished the EverStart this past week stated that Lake Okeechobee wasn’t fishing it’s best but that in a couple of weeks it will be on fire again. A full moon and warmer weather will really change things for the upcoming Open.

Rounding out the top 10 pros were:

2nd:   EverStart pro Randall Tharp, Gardenvale, Ala., 15 bass, 62-0, $12,000
            3rd:   Keith Fels, Ocala, Fla., 15 bass, 55-10, $10,000
            4th:    Brian Holder, Gastonia, N.C., 15 bass, 48-14, $9,000
5th:    Bryan Honnerlaw, Moore Haven, Fla., 15 bass, 47-6, $8,000
            6th:    Kent Ware, Wadmalaw Island, S.C., 15 bass, 42-9, $7,000
            7th:    Clent Davis, Montevallo, Ala., 15 bass, 41-14, $6,000
            8th:    George Kapiton, Inverness, Fla., 14 bass, 41-6, $5,000
            9th:    Brandon McMillan, Clewiston, Fla., 13 bass, 40-10, $4,000
10th:  Jeff Fitts, Keystone Heights, Fla., 15 bass, 39-12, $3,000

Complete results can be found at FLWOutdoors.com.

Medlock caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Pro Division Friday – a 10-pound, 8-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s EverStart Series Big Bass award of $300.

Rodney Glunt of Orlando, Fla., won the Co-angler Division and a Ranger 177TR with an Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor with a three-day total of 11 bass weighing 29 pound, 4 ounces.

Rounding out the top 10 co-anglers were:

            2nd:   Cal Clark, Pulaski, Tenn., 13 bass, 28-5, $4,500
3rd:   Kevin Spooner, Vero Beach, Fla., 12 bass, 26-7, $4,000
4th:    Vince Parker, Keystone Heights, Fla., 12 bass, 25-12, $3,500
            5th:    Joe Ventrello, Orlando, Fla., 15 bass, 24-8, $3,000
6th:    Brad Aldridge, Starkville, Miss., Fla., 11 bass, 24-2, $2,500
7th:    James Boyd, Russellville, Ala., nine bass, 20-1, $2,000
8th:    Michael David Young, Bowling Green, Ky., 12 bass, 19-13, $1,500
9th:    Ron Buck, Port Saint Lucie, Fla., 11 bass, 18-9, $1,000
            10th: James Brooks, Inverness, Fla., 8 bass, 16-13, $800

Curtis Seale caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Thursday – a 7-pound, 13-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s EverStart Series Big Bass award of $200.

Lane Leads by 5-Pounds at Harris Chain Bassmaster Open1/20/2012 6:30:44 PM

B.A.S.S. Communications

It was a day of regulars and records on the Harris Chain of Lakes at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open. The regulars were local anglers like Chris Lane and Tim Frederick, who continued to show their dominance. The record – at least for B.A.S.S. history on these waters – belonged to Bassmaster Elite Series rook Jared Miller of Norman, Okla.

Lane, formerly of Lakeland, Fla., and now residing in Guntersville, Ala., had another stellar day after weighing in 20 pounds, 8 ounces yesterday. His 5-bass limit weighed 23 pounds, 14 ounces, giving him a two-day total of 44-6 and the lead going into the final day of competition, but he said it wasn’t easy.

“I really had to slow down and change some things,” Lane said. “The fish changed overnight because it was a little colder. The water temperature was 58 degrees this morning, when it had been in the low 60s on previous mornings.”

Lane has been remarkably steady thus far, but admits things can change in a hurry on the Harris Chain. “I’m expecting some surprises tomorrow. It’s possible for anyone to catch a 30-pound bag here the way these spawners are moving up.”

Will Lane change his methods or locations in the final round? Even he doesn’t know just yet.

“I’ve got a spot I haven’t been to yet,” he said. “It’s not that far from where I’m fishing, but it’s a long idle to get back there. I’m not sure I can leave the fish I’m on to fish this other area, but I know it hasn’t been fished by anyone, and it could be a great backup spot. I’ll make that decision on Saturday.”

Tim Frederick, the Day One leader, wasn’t able to match his first round magic, but his second round total of 38-11 was good enough to keep him in the hunt in third place. Clifford Pirch of Payson, Ariz., is second with 39-6.

The day’s big catch belonged to Elite Series pro Keith Poche with 25-3. He’s optimistic about his chances on the final day.

“I had a terrible first day because I had to share the water with so many other boats,” Poche said. “With just 12 boats on the water tomorrow, I like my chances to have another good day.”

Poche is catching his bass on Lake Eustis using a shallow-running crankbait, targeting staging fish that are preparing to spawn.

One angler who won’t be fishing on Saturday but already made his mark in the tournament is Jared Miller, whose 11-pound, 10-ounce largemouth took over big bass honors in the tournament. The fish is the largest ever weighed in BASS’ history on the Harris Chain. The previous best lunker weighed 11-1.

“I found her on a bed last week during practice,” Miller said, a little surprised that she was still there when competition began. “I caught her on Little Lake Harris. I spent five hours trying to catch her yesterday. Because of the wind and water clarity, I could just barely see her.”

Miller used a white “bed fishing jig” made by his father, Jeff, to catch the giant. “On the first day I caught one weighing about 8 1/2 on the jig, but I didn’t even weigh it for big fish because I knew I was going to catch this one.”

Miller used a 7-foot, heavy-action Duckett Micro Magic rod, a Revo MGX casting reel and 20-pound-test Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon line to fish the jig. He didn’t use a trailer on the bait.

Avery McCormick held onto his lead on the co-angler side of the competition with a two-day total of 26-7.

The top 12 anglers on the pro and co-angler sides will move on to the final round tomorrow. The final round weigh-in will be staged at Bass Pro Shops in Orlando.

FLW Releases Open Letter About Alabama Rig1/20/2012 5:25:40 PM

Kathy Fennel, President of Operations for FLW, just released their open letter about Alabama Rigs and other umbrella rigs for use in their bass fishing tournaments. Basically the letter further elaborates on their stance of allowing the rigs in their tournaments until the effects of using the rigs can be studied and understood by each state's wildlife officials. They are taking a wait and see approach and avoiding any knee jerk reactions or persuasion by pros over reacting to the effects of the new rigs.

We especially liked one section of the letter that dealt with complaints from people that the Alabama Rig will be the end of bass fishing or that it makes a novice angler as good as pro angler now. Which in our experience couldn't be further from the truth.

Here is one excerpt from Fennel's open letter that we appreciated:

"We believe professional anglers deserve more credit than that. We believe their skill and intuition will not be undercut by a baitfish-imitating technique that helps less experienced anglers catch fish when otherwise they might not. Will it force some pros to elevate their game and adapt? Of course it will. Just like GPS, side-imaging sonar, sight-fishing, shallow-water anchors and countless lure, line and rod innovations have done over the years. Buzzbaits and ChatterBaits were once considered radical, as were flipping and sight-fishing. But they are all simply tools of the trade now. The same will hold true for Alabama Rigs. It’s not the end of fishing as we know it."

PAA Lowers Entry Fees1/20/2012 10:00:18 AM

PAA Communications

Entry fees will be reduced for the 2012 Bass Pro Shops PAA Tournament Series which begins in May on Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee.

Official registration begins Feb. 5 for the Bass Pro Shops PAA Tournament Series. Entry fees have been reduced to $1,500 per tournament for the Pro Division. Along with Old Hickory in Hendersonville, Tenn., other events include Neely Henry Lake in Gadsden, Ala., and the Arkansas River in Muskogee, Okla.

In recognizing the difficult economic situation many anglers are in today, the PAA’s Board of Directors unanimously decided to lower the entry fees. As with other decisions, including raising the PAA Tournament Series entry fees two years ago, this move is a direct result of listening to the input from members.

"In 2010, our Tour level members exercised their voting rights and moved PAA entry fees from $1,500 to $2,500,” said PAA President Dave Mansue. “At the time, no one could be aware the economy would continue to struggle and sponsorship dollars for anglers would continue to diminish to their current levels.

“In view of the economy, how it has affected our members and the number of members who can afford to compete in PAA events, I applaud the Board for making this decision. I believe this is an example of our ability at the PAA to be fluid and fully recognize the needs and concerns of our anglers."

Tournament Series payouts for each event will include a 2012 Nitro Z-8 equipped with a Mercury 225 Optimax and T-H Marine Atlas jack plate along with cash. Nitro, Mercury and T-H Marine have been PAA sponsors for three seasons.

“It was important to the Board that we adhere to our practice of providing double the entry fee to the last check paid in the field,” Mansue added. “We believe this positive move will provide anglers with more opportunities to compete while managing their tournament expenses and working to further their careers with competitive events and added exposure through all the media outlets the PAA has to offer.”

2012 Bass Pro Shops PAA Tournament Series
May 7-12: PAA Tournament Series, Old Hickory Lake in Gallatin, Tenn.
July 23-28: PAA Tournament Series, Neely Henry Lake in Gadsden, Ala.
Sept. 10-15: PAA Tournament Series, Arkansas River in Muskogee, Okla.

How to Make a Stinger Hook for Soft-Plastic Toads1/20/2012 7:00:00 AM

Cut treble stinger not filed

There is nothing more explosive that a giant bass hammering a topwater toad being pulled through the slop. The bite can be unexpected and many times the angler really doesn't know when it will occur. Quick reaction to the bite is critical, but too quick can mean missed fish. Busting through vegetation usually means these fish are feeling the vibration of the bait versus seeing it. Zeroing in on it is the tough part, and many misses are not angler misses but rather the bass actually missing the toad.

In the last few years, plastic buzzing frogs, as many call them, have gotten much better and are in a unique category of their own. Toads like the Zoom's Horny ToadKicker Fish's Xplodin' Toad and Strike King's Rage Toad all have characteristics that make them much different to fish, unlike any other genre of bait on the market. The have larger bodies, unique legs and the vibration they make allows them to be fished in the heaviest cover or even in open water. Great colors combined with great action can turn a so-so day into a great one very quickly.

By the very nature of the way the toad is built, missed fish are part of the equation. The legs of the toad create the action and short strikes can result. The type of the frog determines what hook works best. Larger offset worm hooks, up to 5/0, are used on larger, bulkier frogs and smaller hooks of the same type like 3/0 and 4/0 are used on thinner/smaller frogs. There are some frog specific hooks on the marketplace from Gamakatsu that also work very well. The are much like the hooks in the hollow bodied frogs like the Spro Bronzeye, Kopper's Live Target Hollow Body Frog Strike King's KVD Sexy Frog or  Snag Proof Bobby's Perfect Frog

We like to take the "miss" out the equation whenever possible, and we have two methods of using a treble hook as a stinger hook. The first method is pictured above where we clip one of the hooks and use the other two as stingers positioned in the legs. Besides better hook ups this method allows the legs to be spread further for better action as well. Simply position the hook on the main hook with the line tie horizontal to the frog. Clip the exposed hook and add a keeper to keep the hook from coming loose. We use surgical tubing or a coffee straw for this application. Once positioned correctly we then file the shank down to the weld for a cleaner presentation and so it doesn't pick up trash on the retrieve.

SpinTech  stinger

The second method of attaching a full treble as a stinger takes a special hook. We use the SpinTech treble for this application. Position the hook based on the worm hook used in the bend of the hook by pushing the line tie end through the frog. The SpinTech Treble gives the ability to turn the line tie for correct position to allow the worm hook to pass through. Other hooks do not allow for proper positioning of the line tie in most applications. Simply bury the hook points in the frog body and you are ready for action. This method is a bit harder on the frog after a few fish so you may have to buy more frogs as a result. We like the thicker bodied frogs for this set up.

Using a stinger hook in your frog fishing will allow for better hook-ups and eliminate many short strikes.

Frederick Leads Day One of Harris Chain Bassmaster Open1/19/2012 6:53:24 PM

via B.A.S.S. Communications

The talk all week was that a cold front would slow the fishing and anglers would be lucky to bring 15 or 16 pounds to scales at the Harris Chain of Lakes in the first Bass Pro Shops Southern Open of 2012. The talk was mostly right, but fortunately for Tim Frederick, he wasn't listening. The Leesburg, Fla., pro had a limit weighing 28 pounds, 3 ounces to take a commanding lead over 196 other anglers. He is nearly eight pounds ahead of Bassmaster Elite Series pro Chris Lane.

Frederick was mostly tight-lipped about his day. After all, there are still two days of competition left, tens of thousands of dollars and a berth in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic at stake. But he did say that he was expecting the tournament to be a sight-fishing event, but that a recent cold snap had thwarted most of the bass's spawning efforts.

"I decided to play a hunch and go to a staging area I know about," Frederick said, referring to a spot where bass hold prior to moving to the spawning grounds and laying their eggs. "Within half an hour I had about 20 pounds."

Frederick said he caught his limit fishing a variety of ways and noted that another 20-pound-plus catch is possible in his area tomorrow. In fact, most of the top anglers from Day One were optimistic that fishing would improve as the tournament went on. Though Frederick was in the tournament's first flight of boats (and therefore left the launch earliest and returned to the ramp earliest), most of the top weights were caught later in the day.

Chris Lane of Guntersville, Ala., is in second place with 20-8 and believes the bass are beginning to move shallower to spawn. He's hopeful he can repeat his success tomorrow, but said that "the Harris Chain is notorious for good fishing one day and tough fishing the next." He admitted that his most successful area had been heavily pressured on the first day and that he'd need to make adjustments to his location and methods if he was to do as well in the second round.

The big bass of Day One belonged to Steve Wisdom and weighed 8-15. The fish made up more than half of his total catch of 15-1 and was his first catch of the day.

"I didn't fish very well today," Wisdom said. "I lost a bunch of fish." Fortunately for Wisdom, he caught the best of them. His lunker fell to a 1/2-ounce Strike King Redeye Shad (gold with a black back).

Heath Smith's 8-11 largemouth made a run at Wisdom's daily lunker and helped to put Smith in fifth place with 18-11. "I was catching little ones in practice and just hoping to finish in the money," he said. "The big one was my second bass of the day. I'm fishing a perfect prespawn area that should reload, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

If the weather stays warm for the next two days of competition, large females will likely move into their spawning areas. That should mean big weights at the scales. At the moment, Tim Frederick is on pace to surpass Byron Velvick's record for a three-day catch in the 5-bass-limit era. In 2000 on California's Clear Lake, Velvick had 83-5.

On the co-angler side, Mobile, Alabama's Avery McCormick leads the way with a three bass limit weighing 12-7 and George Hirapetian has the big bass at 8-2.

The Shyne Agency announced today that it has been selected as the Licensing Agency of Record for Heaven Hill's Evan Williams Bourbon brand, one of the nation's fastest growing bourbon brands.  The agency will leverage the long-standing tradition of Evan Williams Bourbon into both food and non-food categories to reinforce the incredible growth the brand has experienced over the past several years, including six straight years of exceeding category growth.

Shyne Agency will help Evan Williams extend the brand's history, tradition, namesake, logo, packaging, artwork and brand position into multiple categories including food, apparel, housewares, and within other activities where bourbon drinkers are present.

“Evan Williams has always delivered a bourbon that our consumers could count on – it's a smooth bourbon and is priced right,” noted Susan Wahl, Senior Brand Manager for Evan Williams at Heaven Hill. “Bourbon consumers love to use our product in a variety of ways, and through licensing, Evan Williams will continue to deliver by bringing them new products that stay true to our brand promise.”

With a history dating back to 1783, when the brand's namesake was named Kentucky's First Distiller, the brand has always had a loyal following of consumers that knew they were getting more bang for their buck.  The brand is available nationally through mass retailers, grocery, drug, convenience and club stores.  Over the last 10 years, Evan Williams Bourbon has increased its effort to drive brand awareness through national print, TV and online marketing, retail promotions and sponsorships of organizations such as the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society and Championship Bull Riding.

Bass Cat Boats Signs with Major League Fishing1/17/2012 4:31:15 PM

Bass Cat Boats has signed on as the newest sponsor in the Major League Fishing line up. The boat builder sees the new bass fishing tournament format and collection of anglers as a breath of fresh air to the sport.

"When they first contacted us about Major League Fishing, we jumped in early at that first opportunity. This is exciting and will change anglers’ styles as their approach will be different from normal tournament fishing,” said Rick Pierce owner of Bass Cat Boats

“The format will capture the viewers and present a totally new angle of the sport. Just seeing how the audience reacts will be interesting. It is not like a typical bass tournament. It’s more of a very high-amp skins game, sort of an IROC race on steroids. We are pleased to be a part of the new format the anglers and the Major League Fishing directors have presented. "

Major League Fishing, a partnership between Outdoor Channel and 24 of the world’s best anglers, features made-for-television bass fishing events designed to bring high-level challenges to participants and entertainment, as well as insight, to audiences.

The league’s first event, the Challenge Cup, will be offered beginning Feb. 13 on a series of Internet-based pay-per-view broadcasts. The event will also air on Outdoor Channel in April.

“We are extremely pleased that Bass Cat sees the excitement and the long-term potential of Major League Fishing, and we’re honored that this excellent company is stepping up as a sponsor,” said Major League Fishing Commissioner Don Rucks.

BoatUS to Provide Towing Service at Bassmaster Opens1/17/2012 3:30:20 PM

Traveling thousands of miles each year on the road and making it to the weigh-in at the end of a tournament day are “givens” for today’s successful pro angler. But roadside breakdowns and on-the-water troubles can threaten a winning paycheck. To provide insurance against such setbacks, BoatUS Angler, which has provided both roadside and on-the-water assistance to boat and rig owners for nearly 20 years, has signed a sponsorship agreement with B.A.S.S. to be the Official Towing Service of the 2012 Bassmaster Bass Pro Shops Open Series.

“On more than one occasion last year, we saw firsthand the value of BoatUS Angler being able to provide much-needed assistance to our anglers during competition,” said B.A.S.S. Senior Tournament Manager Chris Bowes. “Entering a formal agreement to have BoatUS Angler towboats officially available to all Open competitors is a very logical relationship,” Bowes explained. “It’s a reassuring benefit to our anglers, as well as the B.A.S.S. staff who, first and foremost, want to see all of our competitors return safely to the dock each afternoon.”

“Our TowBoatUS Dispatch Service handles on-the-water breakdown calls on most of the nation’s major inland lakes, rivers and reservoirs,” said Boat Us Angler Rep Steve Levi. “If we don’t have TowBoatUS location nearby, our 24/7 dispatch centers can get you the help you need whether your engine fails, you’re out of gas, your battery dies or you run aground in shallow water.”

The On-the-Road Towing package costs $38 and includes a BoatUS Angler membership; it’s intended for bass anglers concerned about breakdowns on the highway. Those who want on-the-water assistance might choose the On-the-Water Unlimited Freshwater Towing package for $58, and a combination program offering both on-the-road and on-the-water coverage costs $72. All three offerings qualify for the “Weigh-to-Win” tournament cash bonus program at no additional cost.

The contingency also applies to the Bassmaster Weekend Series. For information or to register, phone (918) 742-6424 or go to BoatUSFishing.com.

Alabama Rig Banned by B.A.S.S. for Elite Series and Classic1/17/2012 2:04:45 PM

We just received a communication from B.A.S.S. that in essences bans the uses of the Alabama Rig in competition and practice for the Bassmaster Classic and the Elite Series competitions. Here is their communication in full:

B.A.S.S., upon the recommendation of its Bassmaster Elite Series Rules Committee, has amended its tournament rules to limit anglers competing in the Bassmaster Classic and Bassmaster Elite Series to the use of a single lure during practice and competition.

The rule change, which does not apply to Bassmaster Open, B.A.S.S. Federation Nation, College B.A.S.S. and other events, clarifies the intent of long-standing rules permitting only one rod, one reel and one cast at a time. No longer permitted are double soft jerkbait rigs, drop shot rigs with jigs used as weights, double topwater setups and other multi-lure rigs, such as “umbrella rigs.”

The change becomes effective Feb. 1 and includes the upcoming Bassmaster Classic at Shreveport-Bossier City, La., Feb. 24-26.

Elite Series Rules Committee members, comprised of 2012 Bassmaster Elite Series qualifiers, seemed most concerned about new multi-lure rigs such as The Alabama Rig, which Bassmaster Elite Series pro Paul Elias used to win an event on Lake Guntersville in October. In the weeks since, tens of thousands of the multi-lure devices have been sold, and they have proved extremely effective in both recreational and competitive fishing.

The Alabama Rig and similar setups from other manufacturers consist of a weighted head with five wire leaders trailing behind. Soft plastic swimbaits and similar lures are attached to the leaders, imitating a school of baitfish.

Rules Committee members believe the rig eliminates some of the skill that should be required in tournament competition at the highest level. “It doesn’t matter how you work it,” said one of the anglers. “The fish can’t help themselves.”

“The Alabama Rig has become enormously popular in recent months, and it has definitely had an impact on the tournaments in which it has been used,” noted Trip Weldon, B.A.S.S. tournament director. “Personally, I have enjoyed catching bass on umbrella rigs and found them to be very effective in some situations. I have witnessed first-hand the excitement this technique has generated in our sport.

“However, the Elite Series Rules Committee members unanimously asked to be held to a higher standard,” he added. “We have decided to honor their recommendation.”

The rule change follows a precedence of imposing more stringent restrictions in Elite Series and Classic competition than in other B.A.S.S. events. For example, landing nets are prohibited in the Elites and the Classic but not in other circuits. Additional rules specific to the Elites include off-limits periods, no-information restrictions and new limits on boats that can be used in competition.

B.A.S.S. officials emphasized that the decision should not be construed as disapproval of multi-lure rigs.

“We are as excited as the rest of the country about the new multi-lure rigs,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “We will continue to cover new ways to utilize these tools in Bassmaster Magazine and on Bassmaster.com. Our Classic and Elite tournaments simply have a higher standard for the sake of competition. The rest of us will enjoy learning how to catch more fish with these tools.”

A Rules Committee member added, “I don’t have a problem with the use of umbrella rigs or multi-lure rigs to catch bass. If you are out fun fishing, there may be nothing more fun to use. However, our events represent the highest level of professionalism in our sport and I think as participants of these events, we should be held to a higher standard, as well. I like the idea of one rod, one reel, one lure.”

Clunn spreads bass fishing message to Italy1/17/2012 12:19:42 PM

Legendary bass fishing pro Rick Clunn and fellow Nitro Boats pro staffer Mark Curry recently visited Italy with their families and met with several Federation members while there. While there they even fished a 40 boat tournament on Lake Bolsena, a lake just north of Rome. There were teams from Spain, Russia, and Germany in attendance.

Lake Bolsena is an extinct volcanic crater surrounded by 800 year old castles. Although they didn't win they had a great time and caught some great fish. Rick noted "The fish look the same, just a little more pattern down their backs".

While on the trip they were promoting Nitro Boats, they have  dealer there, and promoted Rick's Wright and McGill rods and Lucky Strikes new RC2 crankbaits. While there they established a relationship with Luca Quintavalla who will be representing Lucky Strike Lures in Italy.

Rick's wife Melissa got to see the sights and spent time with the anglers wives there, as well.

"The Italian anglers are doing everything they can to grow the sport there" said Clunn. "We hope to go back again and help them further with that growth."

New Tackle | Strike King KVD Dream Shot1/17/2012 12:01:00 AM

We spent some time with Jonathan Van Dam last fall in the boat talking fishing and he pulled out a little drop shot bait we hadn't seen before. Turns out it was a little drop shot bait that Mark Zona and Kevin Van Dam had been perfecting called the Dream Shot. This new Strike King bait is about 3 1/2 inches, is extremely soft, smells good and and is offered in several slick colors. Most noticeably is its rounded back and flat belly with a narrow midsection and slightly bulbous tail. It looks awesome in the water. We only got our hands on three of them as they are not quite available yet from Strike King, but they will be a hot buy when they are released later this year.

We really like how the flat profile behaves on a drop shot hook and how it seems to sit horizontal really well, even on the fall with a light drop shot. JVD said he wrecked the big smallmouths up north last summer on the Dream Shot. Said on days when other guys were struggling with drop shot worms and goby type baits, he was slaying big smallmouths consistently. He said the attention to some of the colors has been just as important as Zona and KVD getting the shape and action just right. He said they will be a huge ace in the hole for him in 2012 before they are widely available to everyone.

Zona actually carved up one of KVD's Caffeine Shads with an Exacto knife on a trip where the smallmouths were being especially finicky towards smaller profile drop shot offerings and he wanted something with a little more bulk than a regular drop shot bait but not quite as bulky as a full sized Caffeine Shad. You can notice the similarities to the two baits in this bottom photo if you're familiar with the Caffeine Shad. We expect this will be a hot release at ICAST 2012. We'd definitely like to get our hands on a few more than the three we have now before this fishing season gets flying!

Mercury 150 Steps It Up1/16/2012 3:49:59 PM

Today's Mercury Outboards are tough as nails and if maintained properly, do not need much dealer work done on them. Other than routine maintenance you can perform yourself, you spend more time on the water and less time at the dealer.

Routine maintenance on four stroke engines includes oil and filter changes, lower unit lube changes and greasing where necessary. That is it.

When Mercury announced their new 3.0L 150 Fourstroke Outboard they took the owners peace of mind even further. Inside the engine cowl is a QR code that takes you through the steps, necessary tools, and proper way to do all of the above and you can watch the videos while you are working on it, right at the motor. You can watch them on your smartphone as you do the work. Pause, fast forward and reverse as needed.

The new Mercury 150 Fourstroke is an industry leading motor in several categories. It's  tough, quiet, smaller and light, and now easy to do routine maintenance on as well.

The video step by step instructions are clear and concise and clearly shows each step. You can take a look at the videos by scanning the QR code below. It's that simple.

Kicker Fish Warehouse Destroyed by Fire1/16/2012 12:56:31 PM

We just put up the introduction of the Bubble Fry from Kicker Fish Bait company and were informed by Kelly Jones, owner of Kicker Fish, that his primary warehouse was destroyed by a fire caused by arson last night. The lost their inventory of everything except their Bubble Fry and 11-inch Ribbon Tails that were stored in a secondary warehouse. Now would be a great time to stock up on those two products if you like their Hole Shot series and help get them back on their feet stronger than ever.

You can find several producst at TackleWarehouse.com with more coming once they get their inventories built back up.  If you're looking to stock up on big worms or the new Bubble Fries that we think will be awesome prespawn Carolina-rigged plastics for grassy lakes and highland reservoirs alike, check out KickerFishBait.com.

Please keep the folks at Kicker Fish in your prayers as they get through this tough time. We never will understand the selfishness of folks who do these types of senseless acts to the good folks in fishing.

Schwabero, indicating his hope for a long-term partnership, said, “Mercury has just introduced a new 150-horsepower four-stroke that we’d like to see on Major League Fishing boats in the future. It’s the lightest, most durable engine in its class, and it would be perfect for this style of action.”

Ashmore's Bright New Ride1/11/2012 8:33:25 AM

Courtesy of B.A.S.S. Communications

In his new boat wrap, Scott Ashmore might run at 90 mph, but he sure can’t hide.

As in other years, the Bassmaster Elite Series pro’s wrap is an eye-catching green-on-black motif for title sponsor Kershaw Knives. But the latest edition goes one better: a light system makes the green accents appear to glow when the boat is on its trailer.

The LED lights by Bluewater make his rig a rolling billboard after the sunsets. But even in daylight, few could miss the rig, a Legend Alpha 211 powered by Yamaha. Besides the green Kershaw logo, bright green trim surrounds his Lowrance electronics units and covers his MotorGuide trolling motor casing. Even his dual Power-Poles are green.

The color scheme matches his tournament jersey and shoes, the item that started it all.

“Years ago, I bought a pair of tennis shoes I loved the color of. I said it would be the color of my next boat. When they mixed the colors, they said it was ‘Scott Ashmore green,’ and that’s what we still call it,” said the pro from Broken Arrow, Okla.

Ashmore is the third Elite Series pro to run a Legend; Jason Quinn and Chris Lane also each have one. With the LED uplighting, Ashmore has gone all-out to make his rig stand out, but it’s technologically advanced as well. This season he’ll have an iPod in a waterproof mount on the dash. He can’t use it (or any phone) while he’s competing, but at other times, the iPod will keep him connected, he said.

“My boat is, after all, my office,” he said.

Kriet and McClelland Set for Team Tournament1/10/2012 8:30:00 AM

PAA Communications

Hefty pro Mike McClelland of Arkansas and Uncle Ray’s pro Jeff Kriet of Oklahoma have roomed together, traveled together and completed against each other for years on the professional bass circuits.

One thing they can’t do is fish together.

“We’ve tried and it just doesn’t work,” McClelland said. “We fish so much alike and look for the same fish or areas, but we don’t have the same ideas. We fished together in the Texas-Oklahoma shootout two times and those were among the worst days we’ve ever had. The other time, we drew out in a Bassmaster Open event on the Red River, were both on fish and had a terrible day.

“We agree to disagree,” McClelland added. “My wife says we both want to be captains.”

Instead of forcing the issue, the veterans realize while their skills may be parallel their mindset isn’t conducive to being on the front deck together. They’ll square off against each other Jan. 23-28 in the PAA Tour Team Challenge on Lake Toho out of Lakefront Park in Kissimmee, Fla.

Tournament days are Jan. 26-28, with weigh-ins at Lakefront Park in Kissimmee the first two days and final weigh-in at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World on International Drive in Orlando.

Tour Team Challenge teams must have at least one PAA Tour-level angler, with the other being a Tour- or Advantage-level member. The Advantage member can be a family member, friend or sponsor, or two Tour members may fish together.

The winning team will take home a fully-rigged Nitro Z-8 with a Mercury 225 Optimax and $14,400, while the second-place team will win a Nitro Z-7 with a Mercury 150 Pro XS and $5,000. Tour members also will receive points toward the PAA Angler of the Year title. Tournament highlights will be broadcast on FishPAA Television later in the year.

Among the teams registered or committed to participate are Guy Eaker and David Hendrick, Todd Auten and Marcus Malucelli, Dean Rojas and Terry Seagraves, Gerald Brown and Bobby Lane, Gary Clouse and John Kremer, Terry Scroggins and Gerald Swindle, Russ Lane and Derek Remitz, Shaw Grigsby and Paul Elias, and others.

Kriet will team up with Jason Reyes of Texas, who won the inaugural Toyota Texas Bass Classic qualifier in 2008 on Choke Canyon. McClelland plans to join forces with Tackle Warehouse pro Jared Lintner of California, a noted shallow-water stick.

McClelland said he “was tiptoeing around about asking” Kriet if he planned to fish the Tour Team Challenge and Kriet mentioned he might fish with Reyes.

That didn’t bother McClelland a bit.

“A lot of it is because we fish so much alike, if nothing’s working then there’s probably not an alternative for us,” McClelland said. “Teams have to plan some strategies, so maybe one guy is on them on a lipless bait out deep and the other is catching them flipping. Then you have two options. Jeff and I want to be offshore. For a team event, you probably need to have some options.”

Lintner and McClelland will be able to cover inshore and offshore areas on Toho with equal confidence. The tournament is slated for the week after a full moon, primed for pre-spawn and possible spawning situations depending on temperatures.

“We’ve never been in a boat together,” McClelland said. “Jared’s fished with both of my boys. He’s a really good angler, and I respect his knowledge and confidence. He’s younger than I am, more willing to take risks and gamble. For example, with his Western background, he’s more apt to pick up a swimbait when I might not think about it or not throw it very long.

“That might be out of the norm for me, but I’m going to learn to do it. I think this team event will be fun but also could be helpful for some guys to learn some things with their partners. I said a long time ago if you ever get in a boat with someone, either a co-angler or pro at whatever level, if you don’t leave after a day without learning something then you had your eyes closed.”

How-to Handle Fluorocarbon Correctly1/9/2012 7:33:00 AM

Fluorocarbon line can be less friendly than other types of lines to spool on a reel. It is stiffer which helps feeling baits work in the water, but it can be a bugger when respooling. It flows off a reel smoothly but can cause issues on the spool as a result.

When spooling fluorocarbon on a baiticaster, turn the spool up on it's side and make sure the line feeds from the top of the spool into the reel. Put resistance on the line spool, and wind it on evenly and slowly. Braided line should be tightly wound on the reel. Fluorocarbon needs firm tension but not ultra tight.  Do not put too much pressure on the reel spool and allow the line to lay evenly on the reel. Doing it this way will not crimp the line or have it cut against itself and will prolong its life. We also use mono or dacron as a backer to fluorocarbon to reduce cost and get more mileage out of a 200-yard spool of line.

We also like to use a good line conditioner on the new spool of line too. The conditioner helps with memory and allows for further casting.

Fluorocarbon has become more and more important in using larger lines when fishing for bigger bass and around cover without fear of losing them. You get more sensitivity and more abrasion resistance without compromising on invisibility. The tradeoff is the fluorocarbon line can be stiffer than other line types. But if you take care in how you spool the line, use backing to cut down on cost and a good conditioner to keep the line smooth and more manageable longer, you'll find yourself wanting to use it more.

The Seaguar Line Tip of the Month is brought to you by Seaguar fishing lines. Seaguar is the maker of AbrazX, InvizX, Red Label and TATSU premium fluorocarbon fishing lines as well as Kanzen braid and Senshi Monofilament. You can read more about the premium and affordable fluorocarbon lines and other great lines from Seaguar at Seaguar.com.

Man Arrested for Murder of FLW Series Champion McMillan1/8/2012 4:10:00 PM

The Palm Beach Post is reporting that a suspect has been arrested in the case of the murder of beloved Okeechobee angler and Belle Grade grocery store owner. Jimmy McMillan, winner of the 2009 FLW Series bass fishing tournament on Lake Okeechobee was murdered last Monday at his grocery store in Belle Grade, Fla. The surveillance camera caught the suspect on film and the shots were circulated in the community by friends and law enforcement.

This won't bring back a beloved part of our fishing family. Everyone that knew Jimmy liked him. His son Brandon is an up and coming angler, winning the FLW Tour Open on Okeechobee in February 2011. Our hope is that this will give his three sons, wife and friends that loved him a little closure and peace in this time of sorrow.

Crews Launches New Soft Plastics Lure Company1/5/2012 11:09:06 AM

With more than 10 years as a professional angler on the nation’s top circuits, John Crews brings his design and tournament experience into the market with the launch of MISSILE BAITS. He's already a proven designer on hardbaits with SPRO and now he's trying his ideas on the soft plastic market.

“This is a project I have been planning for quite a while,” said Crews, who has fished at the top tournament levels for 11 years. “If MISSILE BAITS are good enough for me to compete with on tour, we know we will be providing anglers of all skill levels with soft plastics they can have success and confidence in using.”

MISSILE BAITS offers five custom shapes. The D Bomb, Tomahawk, Twin Turbo, Drop Craw and Missile Craw.

The D Bomb is a 4.5-inch beaver-style with a ribbed body and flappers designed for extra action.

The Tomahawk is an 8.75-inch double ribbon tail that gives extra action in a proven-sized worm.

The Twin Turbo is a 3.3-inch twin-tail grub that can be Texas rigged, fished as a jig trailer and more.

The Drop Craw is a slender, 3-inch crawfish shaped bait designed for fishing on a drop shot.

The Missile Craw is a 4-inch crawfish-shaped bait with a uniquely designed hook slot for tremendous hookups. The Missile Craw can be used as a punch bait, pitch bait or even on a shaky head.

MISSILE BAITS will be offered at a suggested retail of $3.99.

Three-time Bassmaster champion Ish Monroe of California will join Crews in promoting MISSILE BAITS. Monroe will be fishing with MISSILE BAITS during the 2012 tournament season.

“Over my career, I have gotten very particular about what is on my line when money and championships are at stake,” he said. “The designs we have with MISSILE BAITS are dialed in perfectly. I can’t wait to use these new soft plastic baits across the country! I am going to flip, pitch, and cast my way to victory with MISSILE BAITS.”

Real World Experience with Lucas Ethanol Treatment1/5/2012 9:47:23 AM

By Terry Brown

If you are like most of us who pull a boat, fuel costs and fuel types can be an issue every time you pull up to the pump. Flex Fuel vehicles utilize E-85, E-15 or E-10 effectively, but fuel economy goes in the bucket. Boat engines do not like it very well, and all kinds of issues have resulted with its use in them. Most outboards call for regular unleaded at at least 87 octane for best results. You should consult with your engines manufacturer to find out desired fuels that work best.

Since June, I have been using Lucas Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner in my boats and my tow vehicle. It's my security blanket for fuel. As I have documented before in previous articlesusing it has kept my boat engines running smooth and performing at full efficiency. I have even seen my small engine gain back some lost horsepower with regular use of synthetic oil and Safeguard in concert.

While the boats are stored in the Man Cave for a few winter months, it stabilizes the gas, decreases the potential for harmful moisture build up and gives me a peace of mind to know I won't have problems when I run it the first time after it has sat.

The real beauty of this product is its use in my RAM 1500 pickup. The cost of E-85 has made it cost effective to run it. I look for a 50 cent difference between it and regular unleaded as my benchmark. Right now, in my area, regular unleaded is $3.29 per gallon and E-85 is $2.69. I was willing to give up some economy to save a few bucks at the pump but if the miles per gallon loss was too drastic I didn't save much.

I am very much a person who looks at the little things and attention to detail with my vehicles, both on the outside and the inside is mandatory. I keep records of every service call, oil change and update. I really watch fuel economy, as well. Before Safeguard burning E-85, I averaged 14 mpg. It is important to note that I reset my fuel monitoring system on every fill up. With regular unleaded fuel I was averaging 18 mpg. With E-85 and Safeguard, I am averaging almost 17 mpg. That is a very significant increase and allows me to get nearly the same fuel economy with a decreased overall fuel bill. Needless to say, I am thrilled.

A 16 fl. oz. bottle of Lucas Safeguard treats 80 gallons of fuel. Basically 1 ounce treats 5 gallons, and I keep a bottle in my truck always.

Maintaining tire pressure, having regular oil changes with a high grade synthetic oil, and keeping filters clean are all part of the equation too but there is no doubt that Lucas Safeguard is a great product. Whether using it in your boat to clean and protect it or in your vehicle to increase efficiency Lucas Safeguard is a product that takes the worry out of maintenance and service issues.

To learn more about it go the Lucas Oil website.

“I'm pleased to be a member of the Numa Pro Staff," McDonald said. "After fishing tournaments for years, it’s good to be with a company that makes very durable frame and lens combinations, which are light weight for those long days on the water. They are light enough that you won't be sliding them back into place all day, and with the superior optical clarity of the lens, you will see things you've missed in the past.”

Numa Optics frames are constructed from patented Tough-Flex™ and Lite-Flex Frame Materials™, which can be bent, flexed, and sat on without breaking. All models feature reinforced hinges and nose-bridge for durability. The lenses are made of impact-resistant and shatter-resistant polycarbonate, surpassing the most stringent optical clarity standards.

Key features of Numa frames are rubberized nose and/or temple pads to prevent slippage, a tight “wrap” to protect against wind, dust and debris, venting between lens and frame on “extreme wrap” models to prevent fogging. All lenses provide 100% protection from harmful UVA, UVB and UVC rays.

A pair of frames with lenses in place weighs only 23.2 to 31.2 grams for Numa’s Tough-Flex Frame series (approximately 1 ounce), and an astounding 19.3 to 24.2 grams for Numa’s Lite-Flex Frame series (about 3/4 ounce).

Numa Sport Optics was founded by a Special Forces soldier and triathlete who saw that all of his gear was rugged and tough except for his sunglasses. Numa was created to fill that need and to set a new standard for rugged, lightweight, dependable high-quality sunglasses.

Quantum Signs Sponsorship Agreement with Major League Fishing1/3/2012 10:06:22 AM

Quantum announced it will sponsor Major League Fishing in 2012.  Quantum already sponsors seven Major League Fishing competitors.

“We proudly support the most accomplished professional angling team in the fishing industry, and most all of our sponsored anglers are participating in Major League Fishing. So it only made sense that we would support their passionate new venture with the shared intention of exposing bass fishing to an even bigger audience,” said Bob Bagby, Vice President of Marketing for Quantum.

Major League Fishing’s first event, the Challenge Cup, took place Nov. 6-11 on Lake Amistad near Del Rio, Texas. The Lake Amistad event debuted the league’s innovative format that allows anglers to compete with no limit on the number of legal fish they can catch and weigh. Competitors were not allowed to begin competition with stored, user-generated GPS waypoints, and were not allowed any practice time. The anglers also were equipped with real-time leader boards in their boats.

Coverage of the Challenge Cup will be offered early in 2012 on a series of Internet-based pay-per-view broadcasts. The event also will be shown on Outdoor Channel in the second quarter of 2012. Quantum-sponsored anglers Kevin VanDam, Tommy Biffle, Shaw Grigsby, Greg Hackney, Mike McClelland, Gary Klein and Dean Rojas will be featured regularly during the Challenge Cup broadcasts.

Second Toyota Texas Share Lunker Bass Caught1/3/2012 8:00:06 AM

When Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine publisher Randy Brudnicki planned a fishing trip to Falcon International Reservoir with his sons Jason and Dustin for the week after Christmas, he knew the time was right to catch a Toyota ShareLunker.

But the trio struggled for two days, catching only small bass mid-lake and near the dam. On Wednesday, December 28, the north wind shifted to the south, and that made all the difference. "I knew to look for places where the south wind would blow across points," said Brudnicki.

It was their last day to fish, and they wanted to get on the road early, so they put in at the county ramp in Zapata and began fishing around the city's water intake structure. "After spending some time on the main point but only catching small fish, we moved upwind to a ledge," Brudnicki said. "My son Jason, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, started throwing a Strike King 6XD crankbait, a Christmas present from his older brother, Dustin. The big girl hit right under the boat as he ended his retrieve. He set the hook and she pulled a little line. Dustin grabbed the net and in seconds the fish was in the boat."

A few casts later Jason caught another big fish, and they decided to weigh them. The smaller fish went 8 pounds, but the big fish bottomed out their scale. After borrowing a scale from another boat, they realized they had a ShareLunker and took it to Falcon Lake Tackle to be weighed on a certified scale. The official weight is 13.36 pounds. Length and girth were not available at the time of writing.

Keeping the big fish alive for the 5 hours it would take for a truck to arrive from the A.E. Wood Fish Hatchery in San Marcos now became their top priority. "We ran both recirculating and aeration pumps non-stop," Brudnicki said. "The mid-50 degree water temperature helped a lot."

They finally turned the fish over to TPWD about 7 p.m.

The Toyota ShareLunker program will be profiled in the Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine's Spring Fishing Guide due out in February. That guide will also feature a fishing forecast for 2012 and other relevant topics for Texas anglers. The guide will be available free at www.tpwmagazine.com.

Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth bass from Texas waters, public or private, between October 1 and April 30 may submit the fish to the Toyota ShareLunker program by calling program manager David Campbell at (903) 681-0550 or paging him at (888) 784-0600 and leaving a phone number including area code. Fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel within 12 hours.

Anglers entering fish into the Toyota ShareLunker program receive a free replica of their fish, a certificate and ShareLunker clothing and are recognized at a banquet at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens.

For complete information and rules of the ShareLunker program, tips on caring for big bass, a list of official Toyota ShareLunker weigh and holding stations and a recap of last year's season, see www.tpwd.state.tx.us/sharelunker. The site also includes a searchable database of all fish entered into the program along with pictures where available.

Information on current catches, including short videos of interviews with anglers when available, is posted on www.facebook.com/sharelunkerprogram.

The Toyota ShareLunker Program is made possible by a grant to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation from Gulf States Toyota. Toyota is a long-time supporter of the Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, providing major funding for a wide variety of education, fish, parks and wildlife projects.

See More Clearly through the Water When Fishing1/2/2012 11:44:29 AM

The secret is out. If you were watching the new fishing shows this past weekend and tuned into Zona's Awesome Fishing Show, you saw Mark Zona and Byron Velvick using a strange device to look at bedding smallmouth. That device is the Poor Boys Flogger.

The Flogger is a odd looking conical tool used to see clearly under the water, and it's much more than just for bedding fish. You can look at all kinds of structure too. It's almost like fishing out of a glass-bottom boat. Just hold the handle, put the large end in the water and look through the viewfinder. It's that simple.

The Poor Boys Flogger is great to find bedding fish or even to see schools of fish swimming around your favorite stump, and your partner can even watch them take the bait in some deep clear water conditions.

Northern Great Lakes anglers have been using it for years with the same success.

Chad Pipkens, noted Northern professional anger and Ryan Said, Elite Series pro, were some of the first to use it several years ago, and they swear by them. To take a look or buy one, visit PoorBoysBaits.com.
