If swimbaits are the rock stars of the fishing world and plastic worms are the everyday workhorses, that makes crankbaits the swimsuit models. Go into the tackle store and where do you gravitate? It’s not to shakey heads, even though they may catch lots of fish. It’s not to jigging spoons, of all things, though they have a time and a place, too. Plastics may be nice and a buzzbait may beckon you from the pegboard, but the hard-bodied plugs just scream out for attention.

Sixty anglers including BASS and FLW professionals will take to the water at famed Lake Fork in Texas on November 15th to fish for a great cause. Modeled after the PAA event the tournament will feature some of pro fishing's best anglers as well as some of the best local and regional anglers the state has to offer will take to the water for a one-day team event. There will be two 30 man teams split into squads of two for a total of 15 squads each team. Each squad will be paired with an observer and all fish caught that day will be recorded on scales and the best five fish will count towards that limit. The cumulative weight of the 15 squads will be tallied to determine the overall winner but to the anglers involved the kids will be the overall winners. All proceeds will be donated to the Wish To Fish Foundation which is headquartered in the Lake Fork area and provides underprivileged and ill children an oppurtunity to get out on the water and enjoy the outdoors. In addition, there will be a charity auction after weigh in with donated items such as an Edwin Evers autographed tournament jersey and a fully enclosed high-end deer stand. More items for the auction are arriving daily. Observers can sign up by making a minimum $50.00 dollar donation and will be allowed to choose what team they are paired with based on how much they donate. Basically, the more you donate the better your chances of fishing with the pros of your choice.
The tournament started out as friendly trash talking between local anglers and good friends Casey Allison and Mark Perry. "Casey basically called me up one day and was giving me a hard time about my lack of fishing ability when he mentioned we each needed to round up a couple of friends and hit the lake for a little team tournament for bragging rights" said Perry. With that fateful comment, the idea of the tournament was born and basically just grew. "Casey and I are fortunate in that we both have a lot of contacts in the fishing industry and things just blew up", "in our rush to out do one another we started compiling a pretty stout list of names including BASS Elite pros Gary Klein, Brian Clark, James Niggemeyer, Cliff Pace, and Grant Goldbeck. We also got commitments from FLW pros Mark Pack and Tom Redington among others." As the tournament rosters grew they were able to add Lake Fork professional guides Lance Vick, Clint Wright, Tom Redington, Gary Paris, Brooks Rogers, Jeff Kirkwood and John Tanner to the mix. " To complete the rosters we both hit up our buddies that are some of the best anglers in the region. We got guys that fish Bass Champs, Media Bass, CABA, Ignition Bass, BASS Weekend Series, FLW sanctioned events as well as the Stren Series and BASS Opens.", "We tried to get guys from all organizations and those that were known as some of the best including Mike Kernan, Terry Peacock, Robby Rose, Shonn Blassingame, Scott Dean, Trent Menees , Bill Wilcox and Jeremy Grandstaff." notes Perry. "We were lucky in that all these guys gave up their time and stepped up to make tis event a success. We also need to say thanks to pro anglers Kelly Jordon and Edwin Evers who really wanted to fish the event but had prior commitments that kept them out of it".
In addition to the tournament and auction there will be vendors/sponsors on hand with booth space to have product available. The event will be headquarted at Lake Fork Marina which will also be the official weigh in site. There are tentative plans to have a tackle swap and dinner over the weekend as well. Current event sponsors are Fun N Sun Boating Centers, Texas Fishing Forum, Bass Boat Central, Lake Fork Marina and Lake Fork Tackle among others, If you are interested in sponsoring the event or being an observer please contact Mark Perry at eatsleepfish911@yahoo.com for more details. Everyone is invited to attend this great event and it sounds like a great day to bring the family out and enjoy the weekend.

Smart ideas in 2 Handee Angler's Utility Tool
A few weeks ago we spent some time with Toyota Tundra prostaffer Gerald Swindle of Alabama, and he turned us on to a cool little utility gizmo that obviously has had input from anglers.
A lot of Bass Junkies will buy toenail clippers at the store and use them for clipping line or spinnerbait skirts, or maybe notching a soft plastic bait to add more action to appendages. But the clippers, while useful, are pretty much one-dimensional.
Swindle showed us the new 2 Handee Angler's Utility Tool, which is produced by 2 Handee founders Tim "Buck" Reid and Sha "Beel" Fister of Nicholasville, Ky. Because we are Bass Junkies and like to check out anything new or different, we were all over this like a deer on ripe persimmons.
"I came across their booth at the ICAST show where I was looking at everything and anything," Swindle said. "I liked their product and told them I always was looking for quality tools to use in my boat. I think that's important because you need things that will work, stand up over time and will get the job done you need at that moment."
Swindle said he talked more with Reid and Fister, and now Swindle is promoting the 2 Handee Angler's Utility Tool. We think he made a smart choice because it's a very good item to have in your boat or tackle bag.
What you have is a toenail clipper with a replaceable, grooved sharpening stone for hook points, a non-slip grip, a small notch and large notch for tuning crankbaits, and a little point to clean the line-tie eye on jigs or hooks. There also is a hook degorger and a stainless steel knife blade with a smooth and serrated edge.
"That thing will cut you, too," Swindle said. "I just found this to be a very good item, good for the guy who needs all these things in one unit and it's reasonably priced. You can put it in your pocket, in a vest, in a bag or keep it in the boat with your pliers or other accessories."
The unit we've tried has done everything we've wanted, although we have had a little struggle clipping braided line. But we've had trouble using other similar clippers with braid, so that's common. Having the 2 Handee with us has been a blessing to touch up some dull spinnerbait hooks on the stone and eliminate paint on more than one jig eye.
The Inside Scoop
The 2 Handee Angler's Utility Tool is on sale for $19.45 at www.2handee.com, which also has links for dealer locations and for potential distributors interested in carrying it in stores.

Jonathan Van Dam is making a name for himself in the fishing industry with hard work, despite the famous last name of his uncle, Kevin Van Dam.
Jonathan competed on the Bassmaster Southern Open circuit this season and wrapped it up at Lake Guntersville recently. He missed the final cut, finishing 45th with almost 29 pounds, and was 28th in the final point standings.
Van Dam told a tale during Friday’s weigh-in about sitting in the blastoff gaggle anglers may relate to … those who are superstitious.
“I looked over at my co-angler and he’s eating a banana,” Van Dam said, which drew laughter from the crowd. He said that must have been the reason for his lackluster performance.
Van Dam said he’ll compete on the Northern and Central Open circuits next year to learn about more lakes he’s never seen. Chances are we’ll see more of him in the future.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and everyone – men and women – should be tuned in to prevention against the second-leading cause of cancer death among women.
It is the most common cancer for women in the United States. Only lung cancer claims more lives annually than breast cancer, which the American Cancer Society estimates will kill more than 40,400 women this year. More than 2 million women in the United States are believed to have been treated for breast cancer at some point in their lives.
Cancer is an insidious disease in any form. There is no gender discrimination, either: the American Cancer Society estimated more than 2,000 cases of breast cancer in males last year.
Regular mammogram screenings are the most common form of detection for women. Men and women can conduct self-examinations at home. Consult your physician with any questions or concerns.
There are several good organizations worth checking into, also:

We caught up with Aaron Martens at the recent Bassmaster Southern Open and asked how his day went.
“Terrible!” he said. “I couldn’t catch anything but short fish!”
Well, even the best pros have off days and we know it tears them up, especially after a good practice on a lake like Guntersville. Sometimes things all fall into place and other times what looks like a sure thing, or close to it, becomes a bust.
Martens didn’t have much to add about his recent effort in the U.S. Open on Lake Mead near Las Vegas. The Alabama angler, transplanted from California, said he had one of his worst tournaments out there due to a lower water level than he expected along with him just not getting on a good pattern.
“I just need to go out and catch some fish,” he said, but he was smiling all the while. “The Open is one of my favorites. I just stunk this year.”
We know Martens will whack a few of those big spots on the Coosa River and get back in form.

Last week we attended the Strike King Writers Conference and it looked like kids in a candy store. New hard baits, swimbaits and spinnerbaits galore and we got to say "sexy" more than ever before. Even the pro's were impressed, particularly with the new KVD Perfect Plastics. Kevin even had a few new shapes he got to see for the first time. He wouldn't let us look at them but you can bet they will be in his arsenal for 2009. Below is a birds eye view of the new baits as Kevin was heading out the door for testing. We figured he was going out to hide them in his Toyota Tundra pick-up.

Ranger Boats are built right. The Ranger differences are numerous and it starts with the hull. Each hull goes through a painstaking detail process and are the glue that ties the "one piece feel" Ranger together. Ranger calls it the One Piece Feel Interloc Construction process.
Built with performance and long lasting value in mind, the Ranger hull is state of the art from materials to quality control. Dedicated, skilled craftsman start with a mold that is stored in a thermostaticly controlled environment in a new state of the art plant adjacent to the boat building area. No dust, foreign matter, or particals that can cause imperfections. A complete automated process makes sure each boat gets tender loving care from the start to finish. The proper engineering makes sure each boat meets Ranger guidelines for specifications and quality.

Remember when you buy a Ranger you are buying a boat that will last a lifetime and it starts with the hull. No other boat is built like a Ranger!

North Carolina's David Fritts continues to put a charge into an otherwise lackluster affair at Clarks Hill and the FLW Eastern Series tournament. He weighed in another impressive bag of bass today, not matching yesterday's total of 23 pounds 9 ounces,(13-09) but enough to extend his lead significantly over Florida pro Scott Martin who has a two-day total of 25 pounds 11 ounces. Fritts two-day total is 36 pounds 10 ounces.
Moving up to third is FLW regular Jonathan Newton with 24 pounds 6 ounces. Tough fishing has been the rule at Clarks Hill this week. To read more about the tournament go to www.flwoutdoors.com.

Very low water conditions met the field at the FLW Eastern Series today. Starting time was backed up until 8 am for the safety of the anglers but crankbait expert David Fritts of North Carolina found them bunched up and took a commanding lead with a limit weighing 23 pounds 9 ounces. Greg Hackney of Louisiana is in second with 15 pounds 8 ounces and Dale Gibbs of Georgia weighed 14 pounds 15 ounces. All but four pro anglers weighed in today. For standings click here.

Tim Horton and Kelly Jordon of the PAA Executive Board recently presented the PAA Lifetime Achievement Award to former Executive Director Gene Ellison at the finale of the PAA Corporate Cup Awards Dinner in Florence, AL. In front of 450 attendees, Horton stated that “This award represents the highest achievement in Professional Bass Fishing, and we do not plan on handing this award out on a regular basis. It may be 5 to 10 years before we present this award again. As the first recipient of this award, we want to recognize Gene’s unparalleled commitment to building and then guiding the Professional Anglers Association (the PAA), growing the sport of bass fishing, introducing children and families to our sport, as well as his devotion to conservation efforts and his performance as a successful tournament angler.”
Ellison joined the PAA in late 2004, and in just less than 3 years, used his leadership and business talents to “jump start” this newly formed players association. Ellison worked tirelessly alongside professional angler Mike Auten to create the design of the very successful PAA Toyota Texas Bass Classic in 2006. This creative and innovative event has been very positively received over the past few years.
During his acceptance talk, Ellison stated, “I am truly humbled, honored and flattered by this award, and hope that during the years ahead, we can all continue to work together to grow fishing… America’s favorite family sport.” Ellison encouraged corporate sponsors as well as professional anglers to continue to promote conservation and develop our country’s youth. In addition, Ellison share some funny stories about his experiences as the PAA’s Executive Director during a 5 minute talk.
This past tournament season, Ellison has been busy competing in 28 events around New England as well as nationally. In addition, he has participated in over a dozen children’s events, introducing kids to fishing and conservation. “My goal is to put the first fishing rod into the hands of 1 million kids. It’s an ambitious goal, but I am in the habit of making no small plans,” stated Ellison recently. “The PAA has developed beautifully over the past four years and presently has great enthusiasm and leadership. I think the future of the PAA looks very bright.”

Marty Stone has found a miracle growth cure for his lack of hair. A combination of chilly Alabama air and the new PUMA FTD from Basscat. During a recent photo and filming shoot for Basscat Boats Marty showed up early the morning of the shoot with more hair than the rest of the crew combined!
Looks like Stone found a cure for his lack of hair and is now ready to compete with the best of them for hair style of the year on the Elite Series tour. We’re pulling for you Marty!
Note: This is actually a visor wig that Marty had and actually scared us all to death with. At 5am it was way too early for that!

The FLW Series event begins today on Clarks Hill Reservoir. Craig Johnson, a local pro from Martinez, Georgia, with tons of experience on Clarks Hill says it is very tough. "We are 15 foot low and the water color is very stained. It looks like its turned over in some places. This time of year we usually catch fish deep and some fish will be caught deep but it looks like it could be a shallow water bite. The local advantage is gone as far as I can see. I have had a decent practice but it will be a tough one. I believe it will take some long runs to get it done."
Johnson believes it will take around 45 pounds to win.
Clarks Hill is on the border of Georgia and South Carolina.

Elite Series pro Jared Lintner has been a milkman again for the last 30 days. His father owns a milk distributorship called Lintner and Sons and had not had a vacation in a number of years. " Dad wanted to take a extended vacation and asked if I would run the business while he was away and I said, of course" noted Lintner. 'After getting back into it again I am ready to go fishing again" he laughed. " The milk business is a tough deal. You get have get up early and work your butt off. It is very physically demanding."
Lintner used to work fulltime for his dad and said the best part of it was setting his own hours. "I could get up super early(2 am) and be done by noon or so to go fishing."
"My wife still kids me about how tough it was to get up for work but how easily I got up tournament morning" said Lintner.

Alan Clemons, Outdoor Editor of the Huntsville Times, sent us an early weather update from the Southern Open at Lake Guntersville this am. It looks like anglers will have to adapt to a fall cold front.
Clemons notes:
The field of about 200 pros and co-anglers found conditions had changed Friday morning at takeoff. Skies were heavy with clouds and a cold northwest wind may wreak havoc on some guys today. The forecast calls for a slight chance of rain and cooler temperatures as a cold front continues to move into North Alabama.

I have already begun preparation for 2009 both with sponsors and planning. People like Rick Pierce at Bass Cat, Chris Brown at Strike King, and the folks at Bass Edge all believe in me and I take this very seriously" said Niggemeyer.
He is definitely fired up and we look for his 3rd year to be fantastic!!

Pro angler Chad Brauer has a cool idea for a new tournament format. How about a 7 day tournament with no practice?
"Today's events are 3 days practice and 4 tournament days if you make the final cut. How about just starting the event with no practice and fishing for 7 days in the event? The guys that can find them will and you have to be very versatile and flexible with this type of format. Most pros I know really don't like practice but love the tournaments" noted Brauer.
"I know not everyone would like this type of format but I truly believe the cream would rise to the top with this type of format" said Brauer.
Mark Rose likes it too. "If I am going to fish and spend the time there I would just as soon it be in competition. I work just as hard practicing for the tournament as I do in the competition. I like the idea" says Rose.

Ranger Boats, a long time builder of fiberglass fishing boats, has done the tests and compared fiberglass fishing boats to their aluminum counterparts to help buyers find the best value. Money is extremely tight and buying a new boat should be based on affordability, reliablility, functionality, and fishability. When spending your hard earned money you should know the facts.
Ranger disproves the myths.
Some of the myths were 1.) fiberglass is heavier, not true. Ranger fiberglass boats weights paralleled competitive model aluminums. 2.)Fiberglass is not as durable, not true. Ranger Boats One Piece Feel Interloc Construction® standards not only result in a smooth, dry ride, but also deliver a stronger, quieter, and extremely solid overall performance. 3.) Fiberglass is more expensive, also not true. Feature for feature. Detail for detail. Fit and finish. No other design offers so much affordable value. The Ranger Five Star commitment to continually deliver the highest levels of customer satisfaction while setting even stronger standards in performance and fishability has been in place for 40 plus years and that says a ton.
Compare the price, value, performance and standard features of a legendary Ranger to the vulnerable shell of aluminum.

Kevin Short, king of the bass fishing blogosphere, finished third in the Elite Series tournament at Amistad in 2008. Not bad – he can write, he can haul a giant camper around the country and he can catch big border bass. But that third place finish wasn’t just a nice little stepping-stone. It was the culmination of a grudge match against a body of water than previously had his number.

This week Ranger Boats invited a few select media people to test drive their new models of boats for 2009. The new models demo'd were the Z522, Z520, 208 VX, Reata 211VX, and a 1850 RS. Many of the boats were equipped with the new Evinrude 100th Anniversary ETEC HO motors.
Craig Nyhus of the Lone-Star Outdoor News said "Ranger continues to build the best in boats. Its amazing to see the performance and stability of these new boats. It still boggles my mind that bass anglers want to go 70+ miles an hour but at 40-50 mph they still cruise great."
Press will also be taking tours of the new Ranger plant additions and meeting with Forrest and Nina Wood today.
We will be providing more in-depth features and functionality in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!

One of the most frequently-repeated clichés in professional bass fishing is “don’t make KVD mad.”
Like most clichés it has a basis in truth. When VanDam struggles, he typically comes back stronger almost immediately. Out of the cut on Day One? Watch for a monster limit on Day Two. You can see his demeanor change markedly, from loose and easy-going to scarily focused bordering on maniacal.

EZ Towels could be mistaken for a mint....a peppermint that is!! It looks like a mint and is actually a towel. This great new product is convenient, durable and disposable towel that comes in a capsule form and with a drop or two of water becomes a 100% Biodegradeable towel. Perfect for the boat, truck or office. We have used it for all kinds of things. Wiping up a mess, cleaning the dash or even cleaning up a cut or abrasion. This is one neat product. Everyone warned Scott Suggs that when he slapped a Yamaha Four-Stroke on the back of his Ranger that he’d have to take life at a slower pace. He didn’t listen.
Their warnings proved to be correct. Suggs finds himself slowed down at every turn….at least when he’s off the water, that is. Every time he stops at a gas station, a tackle store or even a stoplight, it seems that somebody wants to ask him about the big power plant pushing his boat.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist has found uses for the muck that workers scraped from the Lake Okeechobee lake bed during the recent drought.
Don Fox, who fights a relentless battle tending to the lake's health, has discovered the muck is suitable for constructing new islands. He said a variety of plants grow well on the man-made islands and wildlife - such as turkeys, turtles, mammals and, in one case, a covey of quail - has taken up residence on them.
"The animals are finding food and cover they need on the islands," Fox said. "This is a kind of laboratory. We see what grows well here, and we can transplant it to other small islands we've made."
A nearby farmer covered some land with the muck and found it makes an excellent peat for South Florida's sandy soil.
"He's growing a healthy crop of black-eyed peas," Fox said.
In the past, restoring ailing lakes required removing the muck and finding a spoil site to put it. Muck is not healthy habitat for plants or fish when it's spread over a lake bottom, but once it's dried out, it can support life.
Meanwhile, stripping away the layer of muck on the lake bed exposes sand and seeds that germinate and establish the healthy plant life that's a crucial component of the food chain that nurtures a world-class fishery and other nature-based recreation.
FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto said folding the island-building project into the lake-restoration project reflects the innovative approach it will take to maintain the natural character of Florida over the next half-century.
"The FWC's new report, 'Wildlife 2060: What's at stake for Florida?' explains the pressures Florida's natural systems will be under during the next 50 years as the state's population doubles to 36 million," Barreto said. "We will have to be diligent and creative and develop alternative protection and management ideas, because we can expect development to take over wilderness and wetland habitats equal to the entire land area of Vermont."
The recent rains from tropical storms have brought water levels back up on Lake Okeechobee, and with that, Fox is pleased to see that plants, such as the native submerged plant coontail, is coming back in healthy, sustainable amounts.
"This is good stuff," Fox said.
