There are some lures that never lose their effectiveness. They are go-to lures for special conditions and can be ones that work exceptionally well on certain lakes. The Storm Wiggle Wart is one of those baits and a truckload of money has been won on it either in the early spring or deep into the fall. If its cold water on Lake of the Ozarks or Bull Shoals rest assured that winners will have one of these babies tied on.
The Wiggle Wart has been around for years and even though the best anglers know about them they don't get talked about much. They are kept secret and the pro's that have them keep them under lock and key. They search tackle stores, Big Box stores, flea markets and discount stores and buy them up as quickly as they get put on the peg. Certain colors that are not manufactured any longer are cherished even more. A recent win on the BASS trail by Alton Jones on Lake of the Ozarks let the cat out of the bag a bit but for the most part these baits are revered and horded. Rods go into the rod box quickly and come out secretly on tournament days.
The Original Wiggle Wart has been through a couple of iterations. Storm came out with the orginal and after Rapala purchased Storm they made a few modifications. Diehards say the Original was better but most anglers know they both work very well. Collectors look for them too.
What makes them different? They have a very unique wobble and they track crazy. They run left for a while and shift gears and track right. They skip side to side under water and look like a drunken crawfish with a buzz on. The line ties to a snap instead of an split ring and they gives the bait even more latitude to swim.
Most crankbaits are designed to track straight so they don't head for the surface. Not the Wiggle Wart. Its unique body design makes it act crazy. Depending on the retrieve speed this small profile maniac comes in running everywhere. Bass hammer them and them work well both in deep and shallow water. They can be tuned to run to one side more than another to parallel bluff banks and undercut channel bends and they root around like a hog looking for an acorn. The box even says "Always think like a fish, no matter how weird it gets." That pretty much tells the story.
They are very durable and work well on rip rap too and because they are made in 25 bait matching colors they can be fished in both stained and dirty water. They really shine though in clear water. Smallies, spots and largemouth all love this bait! Walleyes, northerns and other toothy critters like them too.
The Original Wiggle Wart is 2 inches long and weighs 3/8 of an ounce. They are also made in a MAG version that is 2 and 3/4 inches long and weighs 3/4 of an ounce.
