Trilene Professional Grade Fluorocarbon
There has been allot of talk in the past few years of the advantages of fluorocarbon line. Pros and grassroots anglers alike liked many of the characteristics of the line but were always concerned with it breaking. The down side of fluorocarbon was always durability and knot strength.
Many great companies are now building excellent fluorocarbon line but Berkley has hit a homerun with its new Trilene 100% Professional Grade Fluorocarbon. Its very simple, If your not fishing fluorocarbon line you are living in the dark ages.
Early Days
In the early days of fluorocarbon, line knot strength and rigidity were a concern. It was not good in cold water applications and had difficulty with knot breakage. Due to the chemical make up of the product, strength meant larger diameters. Larger diameters meant stiffness and spool memory. Show me a angler that likes rigid heavy line and I’ll show you a tow truck driver. The strength of the line was usually a trade-off. You want a line that could be flipped and pitched and yet one that would not break? It was clear that there was some work that needed to be done.
Today
About 3 years ago Berkley Trilene entered the fray and designed a new “professional grade” fluorocarbon prior to the 2007 Bassmaster Classic. The first two finishers in that event, Boyd Duckett and Skeet Reese, both fished it as a prototype and the results were fantastic. Countless others wanted it and the marketing and production began.
Immediately after the Classic win, Berkley hit the market with this new 100% Fluorocarbon offering and it continues to get rave reviews from anglers who are using it. Hardly a tournament goes by that Trilene Fluoro is not mentioned as key enabler in the win.
It has some great properties. As with most fluoro it is virtually invisible under the water. Refractive properties of this line is second to none and many anglers are using it on bedding fish in clear water applications as a result.
A mainstay on crankbaits and jerkbaits it also has a home with flipping and pitching. Because it sinks it is great on Senko like baits and swimbaits as well.
Utilizing a proprietary 100% PVDF formula it has excellent impact and knot strength. The diameter of the line is smaller than many of its competitors and has very low spool retention characteristics. It can also be cast long distances without coiling, even after extended use.
One of the beauties of fluorocarbon is its staying power. It does not need to be changed out nearly as often. Cut off 6-8 feet and you are ready to go.
