Fenwick HMG, Evolution from Revolution
We remember the old days of fishing rods very well. Generations of fiberglass buggy whips that you never had to worry about breaking but had the feel of a blacksmith. A fish had to swim a quarter of a mile for the average angler to realize that they had a bite and setting the hook was like taking a willow switch and swatting a fly. We truly believe the “one that got away” was coined during that era.
Next along came graphite and boron……Now we are getting somewhere….we thought.
First there was Skyline, the first orange and black graphite rod. Skyline rods were light years ahead of the others on the market at that time. You could actually feel a fish hit the bait and when you laid the wood to them you could actually hook the fish. By today’s standards that rod would be used in the pool hall. Short, heavy and a blank and reel seat that weighed as much as a team of Clydesdales, Skyline rods were ahead of the game but they were still like a set of model A wrenches. Not quite ready for prime time.
About the time we all had arms like Charles Atlas materials got lighter and guides and reel seats more durable and functional. That is when rods actually became a tool by technique and rods were developed to fish specific baits. The days of one size fits all were over and the congregation said “AMEN”.
One of the first companies to get into rod building as a tool was Fenwick. They came out with different blanks with different feels that they called “Power.” A seven power was a medium/heavy. An 8 power was a heavy. Anglers felt they were very durable, not too heavy and they were indeed built to specification rather than 2 or 3 models that came across multiple fronts.
The Fenwick HMG GT70M is a 7’0 medium rod. It has high quality cork and Fuji reel seats and guides and is a perfect “trap” rod. Solid backbone and a quick tip this is a reasonably priced rod with great features of a much more expensive rod.
