Curt McGuire of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., caught a five bass limit weighing 24 pounds, 11 ounces on day one of the FLW American Fishing Series. His catch measured a decent weight for Kentucky Lake, but what's most impressive is that he did it with the lake at near record levels. With that comes debris, mud and bass that don't really get locked on any one spot real well. It's a grind but McGuire has a comfortable lead over Randy Haynes who sits second on day one with a five-bass limit weighing 20 pounds, 7 ounces.
McGuire's limit included both smallies and largemouths. McGuire made a run this morning but hopped around all day long.
"I had the Stratos floored this morning," McGuire said. "I was running as hard as I could this morning and I passed 15 boats on the way and felt like I was out in the lead. Yet I pulled up to my first spot and boat was idling up to it and putting his trolling motor down to start fishing. So I just headed to my next spot."
McGuire is tight-lipped about what he's doing right now but said he started in one creek this morning and just kept moving to get his limit.
McGuire has been second twice in FLW Outdoors events on Ky Lake and had two other top 10 finishes on AFS events on Tennessee River impoundments. He's a very respected angler on the south end of the lake and felt the fish were biting better now than they did in practice. But admitted that you've got to put your bait right in front of their face for them to find it.
Brien Vaughn of Kinmundy, Ill., is in third place 18-15. On his heels in fourth is Travis Fox of Springdale, Ark., with 18-3, and Roger D. Harp of Huntsville, Ark., rounds out the top five with 18-1.
