Wired Reader Joey Tefft of New York gives his thoughts on managing one spot versus running and gunning.
Here is what Joey had to say:
Congratulations Bobby Lane! He deserved the win.
There are two opposite approaches to offshore fishing. You have KVD's, which is burn gas and cover water, and Lane's whose is to manage one spot. It takes a lot of confidence to fish the way Lane did. Those fish could have dried up on him. My philosophy on this is catch as much as you can, catch a giant bag quickly, then you need to run other stuff. I feel that its too risky to sit on a spot and protect it. If those fish dry up, not only do you not have claim to potential other spots, but also you don't have a feel for the rest of the lake.
A perfect example is Timmy Hortons win on Champlain 2 years ago, most people believe he won on one tiny little rockpile, but while he caught his weight early on the rockpile, he then ran around and fished different areas and culled in serveral of them. His day two weight, which was almost 25 pounds, all those fish came from a small grass bed. I watched him for the last 2 days of the tournament and he did not sit on that rockpile all day.
I just feel that trying to manage a small spot like that is riskier than leaveing the area and running around. Again congrats to Bobby Lane.
