Outdoorsmen are gadget guys. We want to tip the scale to our advantage any way possible whether we’re after deer or fish or just embarking on our next adventure. Technology has made the pursuit of happiness in our different endeavors a lot more attainable. We’ve been using a new piece of equipment recently from Lowrance called the Endura Safari.
From an anglers perspective it’s a tool that can take the place of several tools if you want to minimize the number of devices you have to keep up with. First you can use it as a car GPS. The Safari has the option to do Turn by Turn navigation with the addition of a micro SD chip. Add the mounting accessory and you can us the GPS to get you to your next fishing destination.
Once you’re there you’ll want to get on your hot spot or mark some new ones. This GPS can also accept micro SD mapping cards and you can follow contours and drive to specific pieces of cover on the map and then easily mark your spots for fishing another time.
If you go to a fish camp, fish with buddies or fish tournaments as co-anglers, a hand-held GPS can be a handy tool for getting to your spots in another boat and for understanding the areas you’re fishing.
For ice fishing, it’s an invaluable tool.
“I mount the unit to my snowmobiles while I’m getting out to my spots to start drilling holes,” said avid ice fishing pro Scott Glorvigen. “ I use my mapping to locate structure and potential fishing spots which means I spend less time drilling holes and more time fishing..”
Hunters will also love this unit. If you’re an angler and hunter, then this is a great device for not only getting you in and out of the deer or turkey woods safely, but also it can be a great way to find the right spot for your tree stand, mark it and then get you back to it in the dark before the animals start stirring. A compass is invaluable to a hunter and this unit can be a compass, GPS, distance measure, tree stand marker and more.
The unit has a power saver standby mode that prolongs battery life, but it’s always good practice to bring a few extra batteries. The unit retails for $299. There is a Marine version that comes pre-loaded with Fishing Hotspots Maps for $349 at retailers like Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops.
