We got word today from WBT pro Debra Hengst about a neat event going on this weekend (Friday and Saturday) at Lake Belton in Texas. The “Fishin’ for Freedom” tournament will offer up over $50,000 in cash and merchandise for prizes, including a Triton Boat powered by a Mercury Outboard. But more importantly, this event is held to honor or active duty and honorably discharged veterans.
Tomorrow, pros including Debra, Gary Klein and Homer Humphreys will provide seminars on fishing basics. Saturday, soliders, at no cost to them, will be paired up with a boater for a day of friendly competition. They won’t need to bring anything but a good attitude because industry members like Strike King will provide them with plenty of gear to get started. That evening, over 700 people will be provided with a sit-down dinner at the Killeen Convention Center, headlined by a speech from Ranger Boats founder Forrest L. Wood.
“This will be a fun event for me, no pressure since my season is over,” Hengst said. “Although my competitiveness could get the best of me. Really, this is just a small way of saying thanks to those who are in the line of fire day in and day out.”
