FLW Tournament Director Ron Lappin knows a thing or two about big stringers of bass. He has caught a few himself and has weighed a few as well as a tournament director and angler on Kentucky Lake but there is no way he could have foreseen the giant bags of bass at Falcon Lake this past weekend.
When you put some of the best anglers in the country on undoubtably the best bass lake in the world in pre-spawn and spawn crazy things happen.
Unforgettable results were the norm and the final day of the Stren Series Texas Division opener proved to be one of those memorable moments for pro Joe Setina. Starting the day in seventh place, 15 pounds behind the leader, Setina completed an incredible comeback courtesy of a 38-pound, 14-ounce stringer and took home the victory. His total was 92 lbs 2 ounces
Setina’s 38-14 was the second-heaviest day-three catch in the history of FLW Outdoors, regardless of circuit. It also ranks fourth all time as the heaviest single-day catch in company history.
Setina utilized 3/4-ounce Santone flipping jig and a watermelon Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver trailer. Occasionally he would mix in a 10-inch Berkley Power Worm, but 80 percent of his fish came on the Beaver. He threw both baits on 25-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon line.
In second was Rick Cathey but his best day was not during the tournament. He did have a string of 5 bass weighing 38.1 in the event but during practice while guiding caught 5 that weighed over 56 lbs!! Cathey weighed 90 lbs 13 ounces for the event.
In third place was guide Charles Haralson who weighed 89 lbs 12 ounces for the event.
One thing we should mention. WBT pro Debra Hengst predicted a 32-35 pound average per day in a recent Unplugged article. Not bad Debra......only 4 pounds heavy!!!
