We have been testing a new scent product for several months called BioEdge. Generally speaking we can be a bit cynical about scents as they are hard to discern whether they work or not. It takes time and many times it is a confidence deal. If the angler believes it works, it does.
BioEdge Fishing hit the market late last year and of course we wanted to get our hands on it. James Niggemeyer, a Texas Elite Series angler, spoke very highly of it at the Strike King Writers Conference and felt it had indeed made a difference to him. He had just came off of a win in the BASS Opens so we took his comments very seriously.
A cold rendering process is used to extract the ingredients from what fish are used to eating and smelling and the flavors are not cooked out like they are in a hot rendering method. BioEdge comes in both a liquid and a wand and we have found the wand to our liking. Not messy and easy to apply, we have used it on both hard and soft baits, topwaters and deep divers. It holds to the bait well and on a calm day you can see the disapation of the scent come off of the bait. That is a good thing.
We recently tested it while frog fishing and it was crazy. We caught several good fish but had fish bust the surface after the bait was removed from the water. If that had happened once we would have called it coincidence but because it happened several times we felt the scent had something to do with it.
A side bar that we also really like about BioEdge is the consistency and slickness. Fishing root wads and grass can be cumbersome but we have found that baits coated with BioEdge seemingly slide through cover smoothly and won't grab. That is a big advantage as well.
We have used Shiner, Crawfish and our personal favorite Frog and believe this scent truly works. A bass won't travel a mile to hit the bait but if he does he definitely sees it as lunch and wants to kill it. They hold on and it can make a difference in a couple fish.
One final thought. We coated the first foot of the braided line with the frog wand too. We felt a larger scent dispersion was the result and it sure didn't hurt.
We recommend you give it a try and BioEdge comes in 8 freshwater scents with more on the drawing board.
